People have recommended that if you are intent on reaching the hidden sector to use the Rock Cruiser Layout C (The Tektite). This starts you off with a Crystal crew member and the only requirement you must fuffil is to reach the Rock Homeworlds.
I feel you, man.
On the bright side, almost every time I use Rock C I never run into Rock Homeworlds. The only time I ever saw it and made the right jump I had a Fedearation B or something like that. I was a bit mad.
Because the optimal way of doing that involved using the Rock ship, I tried getting Rock for literally weeks. I kept having ridiculously bad luck actually getting the Rock ship, but decided I couldn't complain because I unlocked literally every other ship without even trying.
Then I got the Crystal ship on something like my second game that went anywhere, after getting Rock. And I had switched to Normal at that point, because I was worried if you got the "Fleet Of Your Own" achievement on Easy you wouldn't be able to get it on Normal (turns out this particular achievement isn't ranked by difficulty).
I had gotten the Rock ship as my first one in, like, my first playthrough. I didn't even know what was going on when I got it. xD
Of course, I'm paying for it now in how hard it's being to find the Slug and Stealth ships. I know where they're at, but I can't get to the homeworlds for them.
Rock A kind of sucks, Rock B is actually a playable ship that I liked (It's Shivan Dragon, man), and Rock C is really just a tool to get Crystal to me.
I used to play Rock B as my main, but I agree that it could have been a lot better.
Ah, but why bother to even bother doing the quest at that point? Of course, your entire save file will be tainted with lies afterwards though.
