Personally, I'd say FTL is not a good game in terms of "role-playing adventure of a starship captain and their ragtag crew".
It has great atmosphere, setting, and writing; but the role-playing and story elements are minimal. They are very much in service of the gameplay, and the gameplay is quite challenging.
That being said, I know some people enjoy it just for the "sci-fi adventure" feeling, and don't mind repeatedly losing while doing that.
Where FTL really shines is it's wonderful, challenging, endlessly replayable gameplay. It's the most fascinating game I've ever played. It seems simple, but is extremely deep. It seems highly luck-dependent, but the best players have win rates of ~98% on Hard.
FTL is very much a thinking person's game. You can play it as a casual space adventure, and that might be fun for a while; but that completely misses its true beauty.
Anyway, it's cheap as chips, so I think you might as well play it. You're not risking much money, and it's one of the greatest games ever made. Hopefully you'll like it.
Welcome to the fold!
I think it would be easy to make it into a card game of sorts.
It's utterly perfect for a quick blast and not getting to into something (though I often play far longer than intended).
Personally, I think it's an absoloute gem.
The game I fell in love with and in my opinion is superior would be Shortest Trip to Earth which is insanely underrated. I never beat FTL in all my hours and within my 2nd run on STE beat it. I really like random encounters and you'll see most of FTL's events in a few runs where as STE you can play over 100 hours and still come across something new.
I don't know. That game just clicks for how I want to play a coffee break space roguelike. Lots of ships, lots of upgrades, customization of crew and loadouts. Has much more focus on exploration and crew/ship management all in a whimsical universe full of strange aliens and subpar jokes.
Reminds me a lot of the universe from the anime Space Dandy tbh. If you ever feel like maybe FTL is missing something for you, check it out. Might like it. I know a lot of people who say STE is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ but to each their own. Just thought its worth mentioning that if FTL isn't your cup of tea, try STE :P
