To me, the main mechanics is already quite incredible, so I don't feel like there's a need for major additions other than more content, e.g. more different races, more weapons, more systems, more ships, etc. I guess being able to control multiple ships and fight multiple enemies at once would be pretty cool, but if that happens, I imagine everything would look pretty small, and the HUD would be very complicated.
Certain weapons and systems could also be a bit more balanced. For example, most of the missile weapons aren't that useful most of the times; and hacking is absolutely busted.
Fortunately, there is a mod called Multiverse[subsetgames.com] which has everything I've wanted: lots of new races, new ships, really cool weapon ideas, etc. So I would say, it's almost exactly what I've wanted from a sequel!
