Mods that balance out the flagship?
I used to play a bit of FTL back in the day, but I never actually completed it. Even on easy I think I got steamrolled by the flagship. I remember the gameplay as a pleasant experience, but I got demotivated pretty fast due to the knowledge it would always end with me getting exploded at the final sector.
I've read afterwards that the flagship is pretty much impossible unless you manage to come across a couple of very specific items and weapons, which understandably vexes some players.
I want to return to FTL, but I'd like to have a challenging end boss where your victory doesn't depend on a specific build.

So, are there any mods that makes the final boss a bit more balanced?
I know I could just keep playing on easy, but then everything leading up to the boss would be a cakewalk.

It's doable with a number of builds, you just need to be good enough to have lots of stuff at the end.

Wouldn't say you need to have specific builds. As long as you are strong enough to deal damage to it at a minimum of 3 times as fast as it does to you.

Boss is balanced and easy because it's the same every time. Having teleporting makes it easy to take out 3 of 4 weapons quite quickly(on normal difficulty at least). But different builds would work fine as long as you remember what you need to get ready for. That's just my preference - turtle ship with teleporting, hacking, defense drone Mk I and anti-drone, clone bay, good boarders and prefferably some bomb weapon.
But you don't really need a lot of stuff.

Theres a cool mod called Advanced Edition that does a pretty good job of balancing out the flagship.

Let me tell you something. You have the whole, freaking, run, to prepare for the flagship. You know whats at the end. You know what systems it has and you know what sort of things you need to beat it. You're probably losing because you're being myopic and only focusing on how to survive sector to sector. If you play FTL then you play the long game.
Isn't the Advanced Edition an official expansion rather than a mod?

Also, I've tried to prepare for the fight. I played rather well for the entire run. It's just that the final boss was too ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hard.
More likely than not this is just due to me being bad at the game, but I still wish to have a good time playing it.

You can have a good time if you have the right mindset. Beating the flagship barely even adds anything to your score did you know that? All it does is count as another ship destroyed and add a Victory label to the stats screen. 99% of your score is from everything else you did in the run.
I tend to play for the satisfaction of beating a game / level, which in the case of this game seems to always be out of my reach. Still, that's good to know though.
