clone bay won't work if crew is on ship that jumps away
it's really stupid and annoying tht the clone bay won't reclone my crew when they happen to be on an enemy ship that jumps away.
lost a few crew members because of this.

blowing ship up - just fine. your crew dies in a hideous fire? no problem! we can reclone them!
oh, your crew happened to die because of an event? sorry mate, our clone bay has to be cleaned, so we can't reclone your members. oh, my crew members happen to sit on a ship that jumps away? yeah, sorry, technically they still count as "being alive", so we can't have 2 of the same people running around in this universe, even though they'd probably die anyways.

come on, please stay consistent with your cloen bay! i had to sell my medbay for it, after all.

but i guess my ranting comes too late :D is there a mod somewhere out there that fixes this?

It's consistent - it's prohibited to create a clone of living person. They are presumed to be alive, maybe they are taken prisoners or sold as slaved.

when people board my ship, they either get killed by my crew or they kill my crew and take over my ship.
if my crew truly survived, then they did so by killing all the enemies, meaning they should've been able to jump back with the enemies ship to me to continue their mission.

if they're willing to die for me by boarding an enemy ship that's completely engulfed in flames, they should be willing to return to me when they get the chance if they jsut happen to stay on an enemy ship.

Because you're not a slaver. And your ship is supposed to be hard to track even for Rebel fleet.

Don't board a ship that you are not sure you will be able to stop from jumping away while your crew is on it.

Lure the crew out of piloting or break piloting and then fight with your crew there, so they can't repair it.

Or send one or more of your boarders to shields. Quite often this will cause the guy to leave the cockpit. Do NOT fight in the cockpit if the ship is trying to escape, as all that will do is guarantee that there's a crewmember in there, and unlike other systems, this doesn't take away the manning bonus.

The enemy FTL doesn't charge like the player ship. It's on a strict timer and as long as it has even one bar in engines and cockpit, and someone's in the cockpit, even if they're fighting, the countdown continues.

You usually only run into the cockpit issue with 4+ crew, because otherwise you can lure them away.

alright, alright. so not cloning when the enemy jumps away is acceptable i guess.
problem i had was with ships without a med bay: the injured people would flee to the cockpit, charging it. so i can't lure them away, and fighting in the cockpit to kill them is, as you said, problematic.

but what about events where your crewmembers die? will they be cloned in the clone tank? since i've seen first-hand how the giant space spiders shred them to pieces. i don't think they could have survived that :D

The clone bay will clone crew lost through most events. There are however a few where they won't be cloned. Best is to either experience those and remember them or use the wiki to see whether the clone bay will work with an event.

Clone bay will clone a crew member killed by giant alien spiders.

Fight in shields as already mentioned! Enemies value shields so much it's silly, they can be 1 second from jump and would run last member to shields if you have a boarder there.

Depends on event, you can't clone a member that has a deadly disease or got lost into space while doing EVA. Plainly killed members can be revived, including by those spiders.
If you've played much - you know most event outcomes.

The crew are presumed to be alive until it is confirmed they are dead. As per regulations (which were in the manual you shoud have read when you bought the bloody thing under paragraph 364 article iiv) the clonebay is unable to replicate a life form as long as the possibility exists that they are still alive. Everyone has to abide by these regulations, even rebels.
It seems we also must use the most recently created clonebank of person, that's why you can't clone a sick member - his clone would be sick as well.
