Which ship is better for a new player?
So I managed to unlock Kestrel B, Engi A, B, C, Zoltan A, Lanious A, Slug A, Rock A and Stealth A. I was wondering which ship is better for beating the game.

Slug A, Lanious A, Kesteral B and Engi A are all solid ships. Engi B and Rock A are bad ships for most people.

Well, you only beat the game once you've won with all ships on hard mode. :)

I guess for a first win, Kestrel A and B and Stealth A are probably the easiest to play for a new player.

They are all just basically aim and shoot ships in the early game, except maybe Kestrel A where you have to maybe think about whether using a missile.

My order would be:

Kestrel B
Lanius A
Zoltan A

Engi C
Stealth A
Slug A

Kestrel A
Rock A
Engi B

Kestrel B is up top because its four lasers allow you to target lots of fun stuff and make sure multiple systems go offline - unlike the Kestrel A, where you can only really point at one thing. Plus, its crew is great, and its teleporter goes right next to its medbay.

Slug A,... are all solid ships
I disagree, Slug A only has 2 laser firepower plus a bomb which can make it very hard to shoot ships that are trying to jump away, and the Anti-Bio Beam is too bad to be useful. (If it cost 1 power, or charged quicker, or did more damage, or ANYTHING, it'd be better, but no :P)

What? Anti-bio beam is a great weapon.

Strongest ships of your list would be Zoltan A, Stealth A and Lanius A. All are very potent but th Stealth ship might be slightly tricky due to the no shield thing.

I'd absolutely recommend the Zoltan A, it was the ship I used twice to win normal then hard for the first time. It starts with one of the FTL holy trinity of weapons, zoltan shield is simply one of the best augment in the game next to the pre-igniter, no debate. Crew may be a bit hard at first but mid and end game you're looking at 3 energy bonus. It starts with doors 2 so that counter-boarding and fire hazard is easier to deal with. Layout is a bit weird, still one of the best ships of the game. It's excellent for beginners because of the solid defense and offense from the get go.

Stealth A has excellent layout, decent crew, probably one of the best weapon setup of all ships, starts with cloaking which is fantastic and very versatile and on top of that it has one of the best augment (long range scanner) and one you can rely on to defend yourself or sell for a lot of scraps early. The only problem... is knowing how to deal with threats without a shield, and especially beam drones. Apart from that, Stealth A is one of the Top 3 ship in my opinion.

If you're not already familiar with the advanced edition, stay away from the Lanius A. Good ship but slightly under these two.

I've just found it too unwieldy to use.
- Occupies two power slots
- Very difficult to destroy enemies with medbay without using bombs, at which point you may as well save yourself the cost of using missiles to just laser them out of oblivion
- Utterly useless against automated ships
- Needs three shots to get rid of Rock crew
- Very long charge by which time missiles will have made a small dent in your hull

I know you're supposed to synergize it with the bomb to knock out targets like the medbay but bombs means missiles means expensive and I'd rather just swap it out with another laser.

Plus, the Dual Laser, for 1 power and 11s charge is an extremely solid laser weapon just lacking in dakka. Pair it with literally anything - Ion Blast I, Heavy Laser , and you'll be a nice gunship in no time.

330 hours here, beat every ship on normal and working towards expert. If I had to pick just one out of your set it's Kestral B.

First ship I ever beat it on if I recall was Kestral B. Starts off with a good set of equipment and 4 separate lasers to target different combinations of rooms(I mostly shot weapons and shields at the same time). On top of that, 4 damage from the start is a good deal.

Second pick would be Zoltan A. Pick the right set of rooms and you can 1 shot some ships. The difficulty is getting shields and power as quick as you can, and a better weapon to knock out shields in addition to the halberd.

But! Everyone plays the game a little differently, so find your style! I like to focus on weapons and teleporter late game.

I disagree. It's a great weapon to have at the beginning, which is why I call it the gimmick beam. It gets you the crew kills that are a huge benefit in the early game, when enemy ships have 2-3 guys aboard.

It's virtually useless in the later game, though, even in the event you go for a boarding strategy. Even with 4 weapons slots, it's crap.

Yes, if you can get ride of shield.

The Red-Tail. It's the second form of the Kestrel Cruiser, and really easy to unlock.

It has four Basic Lasers, the dumbest, most basic weapons in the game. . .but it has four of them. It can obliterate nearly any early enemy ship on the first volley without extreme bad luck.

And because Basic Laser is a one power simple weapon, you can swap them out and upgrade whenever you like.

This is a ridiculously good ship and if you don't have a win yet you can probably get it with this ship.

Also it has multiple species on it, so great blue options.

It's just an all around good ship.

So I managed to unlock Kestrel B, Engi A, B, C, Zoltan A, Lanious A, Slug A, Rock A and Stealth A. I was wondering which ship is better for beating the game.

My only warning is Engi B is an absolutely terrible ship and was literally the worst ship in the game before AE came along and introduced even worse ships. Only play these deliberately terrible ships once you're already good at the game and want a new challenge.

Engi A is very solid. So is Kestrel B. Both Lanius ships are also really good although fully taking advantage of them requires a solid grasp of the game. Rock A is not a great ship and its dependence on missiles is a serious problem.

Engi C is also similarly just a good, solid ship and has a cute augment that renders those annoying defense drones completely meaningless. I tend not to like gimmick augments like this that do something great for like 10% of ships you encounter, but this one is fun.

Stealth A and B are also awesome but seriously tough for newer players. Stealth A is the easier of the two. Stealth B turns into a Flagship-killing monster. . .but then there's that ugly duckling phase at the beginning, which can be brutal.

I'd be interested in some tips on Stealth A and B - the stealth is the only ship I haven't managed to complete a single game.

It's taken years and I'm starting to become tired of it - I've tried many tactics, different configs - most of the time it's ok - can get to the boss, but feel as if it's not ready to face it.

The times I feel ready to face the boss, the ship is underpowered.

The first time I used it, iirc, I didn't use shields (took weapons and stealth / crew / boarding / weapons) and the drone phase took from 90% to 0 faster than you crew had time to repair the damage to everywhere...

Stealth A and B are both crazy strong, A is legit one of the best ships in the game (on par with Lanius B / Zoltan A imho), B is much more of a gamble, hits like a truck but very fragile and probably one of the ship that suffers the most from rng. Start with the A if you want to win.

First thing about stealth A is it starts with long range scanners, use it to your advantage, fighting when you're confident, evading when not and planning for hazards, this helps massively. Titanium System Casing can be sold for 40 scraps, don't hesitate to sell them early, it's not such a great augment and demands that you get hit, which you shouldn't.

Now, fighting wise, the difference of course is cloaking instead of shields. Basic procedure is waiting first for the enemy to fire thencloak: with no shields, evasion is calculated when the shot arrive in the grey lines of your ship so wait until the last moment. You have fast firing weapons but many stuff fires before your mini beam, when faced with ion blast, heavy laser, simple and burst laser, little missiles you can often let the enemy fire its entire first volley, pause burst to let it fire its whole arsenal if there's a second or so between their two weapons (they usually won't have more), let the cloaking evade everything (at the very beginning you should already have 90% dodge), then fire your own in their weapons, you can often beam weapons/shields, always get 3 damage (4 on riggers). Against drones, everytime it stops, pause, calculate its firing line and check if it hits anything important, take it if need be. After sector 3 or so, typical strategies apply, but you can use your fast firing weapons and cloak to alpha strike everything.

Now development, keep a lot of scraps for shields (125) in early, but you don't need to update them a lot more until later, early shields is for drones and such, not shots, use cloaking for those. You probably should upgrade to cloaking 2 before getting shields so that you can cloak before they do anything and destroy their weapons before they fire. Do not be crazy, get shields fairly early. Also you have only three weapons slots, so you need to be careful. A single Flak/BL2 will give you 5 shots + mini beam for 4 power, this is more than enough. My favorite weapon setup is 2 flaks + halberd beam but the mini beam is good enough. Stealth synchronise very well with hacking if you're playing AE. I'd say get Claoking 2 / shields asap, remember you get 40 scraps from TSC. Then focus on extanding cloaking (at least lvl2, lvl3 only if you get stealth weapons which you seriously should consider if you find them), buy weapons when enemy level up (in easy that should be around sector 5 or so). You don't need more than a flak or even an honest bl1, this plus you initial setup gives you 4 shots which is enough. Do not play the ship on anything else than easy if you can't win!
Flagship is fought like any other ship really, apply usual tactics, it vastly depends if you're using AE or not. Get Mind Control to deal with boarders as the stealth A isn't very suited for tp yet it can have problems if you're boarded in the back and wings. Get hacking and shields to supplement it, you can alpha strike the flagship with impunity with this by cloaking it's first volley, hacking shields in the meantime, then sniping its cloaking and missiles. Stealth A is a gunship first and foremost.

Stealth B plays early very different, with upgrading cloaking to 3 being the most important in order to fire before they can, then getting hacking to bypass any shields you want without upgrading expensive weapons, then getting shields (then getting weapon pre-igniter and a second glaive beam if the Gods want it).
