Newbie here. Should I play the default version or advanced from the get go?
Been putting off this game for quite a while but finally got it from the sale.

Begin playing advanced or default?

I don't know of any reason not to play advanced. It just adds a bunch of stuff and another difficulty level (which I doubt anyone will use, because the game is so hard already lol)

Learn the basics of the game first. When you feel comfortable with everything, and feel like events are starting to repeat too often, enable Advanced Edition.

I'd recommend playing basic until you win against the flagship at least once.

Depends on how you grind. If you like to prolong the overall enjoyment, go with basic. If you like to power level, go with advanced.

There's no reason not to enable Advanced Edition. If anything, going back to regular is more novel and challenging later.

Advanced isn't harder per se, but it adds a lot to the base game, which can be overwhelming for a new player. It may be smart to get used to the core gameplay and controls in the basic edition, perhaps unlock some new ships and layouts, then work on getting your head wrapped around what is added to the advanced edition.

I mean, if you can't tell a pike beam from a burst laser, then trying to figure the difference when your helmsman gets mind-controlled and your shields are hacked isn't going to be any easier.

Non-AE on easy, the flagship fight is easier than with AE on. The hacking in particular can utterly wreck you.

AE will bombard you with tons of stuff, figure out what the vanilla weapons and systems do first.

AE increases the number of ways in which you can annhilate the enemy.

Unfortunately AE also increases the number of ways in which the enemy can annhilate you...

So I'd go with AE off, simply because there's less to be confused about.
