error while loading shared libraries: libIL.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

when trying to open the game in xubuntu 16.10 I get this error: "error while loading shared libraries: libIL.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory" There is literally ZERO threads online about. So, like usual, I'm the only person in history to get an error.

Saw that you solved this by switching distros, but for this error in general, try removing ~/.local/share/Steam/SteamApps/common/FTL Faster Than Light/data/<arch>/lib/<problemfile> if it exists and installing whatever package includes the problem file (libdevil1c2 for libIL.so.1). The error message says it can't find such and such file, so why wasn't the first thing you do, trying to find that file and copy it, or verifying steam cache?
