Yeah it seems like they sometimes die to the fire instead of the fists. I got it after I teleported a fire bomb into the room.
Exactly, aliens that are running cannot be targeted by melee.
As long as your boarders are not engaged in melee, they can and will shoot [randomly] at any enemy crew in the same room with them, even ones trying to break down the door to escape. [This is a technique I have employed many many times, esp vs the flagship: if you hack the hack room and lure the enemy crew to the doors / cloak, the connecting corridor outside the hack room becomes an excellent kill-zone / bomb trap as they try to flee to the medbay when injured.]
The cheevie only pops if the lethal [kill-shot] damage was dealt by combat, not by the fire [hence it is much easier to get vs rock ships, as noted earlier].
