Crystal Quest
So I got the Crystal alien in sector 6 but with no chance to complete the quest because the remaining sectors weren't valid - is that right?

Yeap, it's a very tough quest if done as intended.

you are really just at the mercy of RNG for that one, if you dont get your sectors in the right order, then you are just screwed.

but of course, you can unlock the crystal cruiser by i think unlocking every other ship and layout, or you can use the rock C and start with a crystal crew. you dont have to rename the crewmember, but if you dont, you dont get a quest marker in the rock homeworlds.

I managed to get it when I was fed up trying to get it and use the Rock C as a short cut.
I actually managed to get the full quest line! XD

I don't know what exactly the wiki says, but as I recall, Rock Homeworlds did appear mostly on sector 7 as far as I can remember.
So from the sector map after leaving the first one you should do the simulation of how it could play out in your head before comitting.
The layout is filled with like 9 nebula sectors? Reset at once.

Optimally you get a large cluster of green sectors at the beginning and a bunch of red ones at 6-7.
If sector 2 is pirate or rock controlled, it can also work getting the stasis thing, but it can be reactivated only on engi and zoltan ones.

And please do it with a rock ship, you can fail to retrieve the pod very often without rock plating.
Keep in mind sometimes you find a pirate ship instead of the crystal ship too. I think you find the correct one with rock plating though.

From what I understand the quest was already made easier as the quest marker for the ancient device used to not appear at all.

Something like 160-200 hours logged including offline time, never actually finished the quest. It's totally luck-based, I believe you can get the ship by unlocking all (most?) other ships, though.

If you beat the flagship will all other ships (except Lanius?) you unlock it. Seems easier to me. So 8 ships times 3 = 24 games I'm well on my way towards that goal.

That's right, I remember that. Sure that Lanius was the exception, that's separate I believe. There are a few ships in there which make it preeeetty hard to win with on normal/hard, though - looking at you, stealth C.
