Rewards for boarding used to be higher before AE, but i still like boarding.
Aaaaaaactually a lot of results from killing crew (free drone, free weapon, free crew) give you absolutely 0 fuel - whereas just blowing them up repeatedly yields 1-3 fuel. You can run out of fuel if you've consistently boarded but it is rare.
On the other hand, the next ship that comes to your distress beacon you will immediately be able to board and then killing them always grants a good deal of fuel.
And yep, boarding = more stuff per fight, really. Also gives you a couple of text-options.
This is why if you're lean on fuel it can be worth damaging a ship you're boarding to trigger a surrender event. Getting a high amount of fuel can be worth foregoing a crew kill. (I tend to get concerned when fuel dips much below 10.)
