Zoltan A? Serious? I've only unlocked the 8 A ships, so far I like Mantis A.
It has to be Mantis A. That ship has no weaknesses.

+ Boarding Party straight off the bat
+ Medbay isn't far from the TP
+ Engi crew is a lifesaver

+ Small Bomb for mashing medbays
+ Basic Laser for finishing off autoscouts

~ Layout of rooms isn't great but you can still vent anything in a hurry

- A lack of sensors. Who cares?
- 3 weapon slots, but this is hardly an issue

Other really amazing ships like the Crystal B and Lanius B have some rather nasty weaknesses. For Crystal B, it's the lack of a weapon. For the Lanius B, it's the waste-of-a-subsystem Mind Control and having to shove extra scrap into your weapons....

EDIT: Okay, who's the clown who voted for the Fed C? That ship is merely "passable..."

well, my favorites for catagories i guess? i couldnt pick an all-round favorite.

for gunship, probably kestral B. good stats all around, with half decent weaponry that you can trade out as you find better stuff. one thing is it has a much better layout then the kestral A, which i found to be a major problem for me.

drone carrier, engi C. starts with hacking, defence scrambler, and a great slotfiller weapon. beam drone i tend to sell, and if i could choose, i would probably swap for medbay. i also really like how the door control is right next to piloting, thats two of the most important systems during a boarding right next to each other, behind an airlock.

boarding, mantis B. yeah it has no weapons, but both the level 4 shields and defence drone are worth it. lacking in starting crew, and the subsystems can be a pain to fix, especialy when they are on fire. boarding drone is nice vendor scrap though, if a nice weapon is on sale.

i also want to include the stealth A, but i dont really know what catagory it would fit in. i use it as a gunship, but it isnt really designed for that. anyway, great starting weapons, cloak, upgraded engines, and long-range scanners. titanium system casing is vendor scrap, but it makes getting shields much easier.

honorable mentions, one goes to federation A, but its layout kills it. another goes to zoltan B, but its somwhat akward layout and broken shields are bad. and lastly stealth B for being the glass cannon, that you dont ever want to use because thats shrapnel bomb if i have ever seen one.

(seriously, think about a cannon made of glass, if its not strong enough to take the blast, it explodes and sends shard everywhere. or you make it so thick that it weighs far too much to be sensible/fires a ball too small to do any damage!)

But i just can't play the Boarding Ships like Mantis A.. I think it Tales too much time, and... I really don't like these starting weapon.

The extra time and effort can really pay off, because killing the enemy crew instead of destroying their ship usually gets you more scrap.

Voted for Federation ships A and C.

The integrated artillery systems work like a charm every time. The time to charge is slow, but given an ample supply of drone parts and opportunites for hull repair drones, nothing is impossible.

In fact, that's how I managed to fulfill my first (and only) victory. My stash of missles were plenty nice, but they didn't quite shred armor the same way as the ol' death laser. :ftlhuman:

They're just such a waste of a subsystem... with AE off they'll smash everything but with AE on they're pretty awful...

Fed C is really bad because it uses a whole subsystem and four bars of power for an oversized Flak II that, on later enemies, will sometimes miss their ship and deal no damage.
It's nice, yes, but it's just such an absolute waste of a subsystem. I'd much rather take hacking, cloaking, or drones over an oversized Flak II.

Lanius B

-2 Lanius right off the bat :)
-Teleporter right off the bat
-MIND CONTROL right off the bat.
-Clone bay to keep my Lanius from being blown up.
-Engi to keep Clone Bay active, um, I mean Pilot my ship.

+No Sensors? Who cares. More reason for a slug. Slugs are good pilots.
+Poor Engines? Eh, my Engi is camping in a clone bay anyway, um, I mean piloting.

Slug A or Lanius B
The Zoltan C is probably my favorite. I really enjoy the power management aspect in the early game, I like the fact it starts with a Drone Control, and you can go nuts on upgrading your systems because you've basically got 8 additional power to dump into your systems during the Flagship fight.

In no particular order after that, my favorites are probably Zoltan A, Rock B, and Slug C.

Stealth B is good if you can survive until you get some shield or enough cloak... Actually, all you need is shield, level 2 cloak and one weapon to take down shields and you are ready for Flagship...

i know, which is also somewhat the problem with it. its a good little ship, and i have done well in it, but it has the same problem as the stealth A. if you start off fine, then the rest of the run should be easy, but failing early is much easier to do, even moreso with the B because its not quite as flexble as the A.
