About Mary's Letter Voiceacting
Can anybody come up with a reason on why they changed and ruined what was perfect ?

They didn't ruin it, the voice acting in the Remake is top tier.

Yeah, it was so top tier she could not stop voicetrembling so hard my ears almost started bleeding up. Worst voiceacted part of the game so far on such a crucial monologue.

I think it was a misunderstanding about James overall.

If you compare the scripts, they actually changed some lines compared to the Original. And it really seems like they tried to push more for a "James is a good person and you shouldnt doubt that".

Thats a reading of the story thats overall very shallow. As while Leave in the original does have lines added that make James more sympathetic (before the letter, not in the letter), theres a reason those lines are only reserved for Leave. Cause the more you play Original 2, the more clear it becomes about how complicated his whole character is.

tldr: Original 2 wasnt afraid to imply that James is not a good person (and theres layers to his actions and character that can change how you think of him depending on your ending), while 2 Remake unintentionally took the "He's a good person and nothing else" angle from it.

Sigh, I guess now we will have people saying the VA of the OG was good.

Original VA had problems but Mary's letter was really emotional and sad, remake version however felt.. empty ?

Bait used to be realistic.

OG voice acting is pretty much perfect as is. You might not like it, but Lynchian is an intentional direction.

Theres a reason Mary's letter at the end completely avoids being Lynchian, cause the original direction knew exactly what it was doing the entire time.

(James, Angela, Eddie all sound "off" on purpose due to their experiences and feelings. While Mary has completely normal voice acting. She sounds 100% real and emotional. That was the goal).

Well, to each their own I suppose. I think they managed to get to that creepy vibe due to poor acting. Always have and always will.

i can absolutely see why ps1/ps2 era voice acting would get replaced with more naturalistic / typical voice work. silent hill's eerie tone was actually helped by that era's voice acting, and for sh2 it was always more sophomoric than actually bad.

in all honesty the letter on its own without narration is effective, so i don't see the remake as breaking it in particular. if i had to pick something about the new in-water scene to complain about, i'm more distracted by the decision to replace the simple light-from-under-the-water and contents of the letter with the envelope.

i can see how someone would like that change but i'm just thinking about how an actual envelope would probably dissolve and smear in the water? the original felt more like the physical attachment to mary didn't particularly matter anymore in that scene, rather just the meaning of what she was saying. like the words vanished from the letter earlier in the game and showed up here at the end instead due to mary's 'will'? i think it might've been changed to the envelope just so new players understand it's what the letter said. maybe remake mary had it laminated.

That doesnt make it "bad acting".

Its intentional and purposeful acting. Its strange, but being "different and uncommon" doesnt make it "bad".

If anything, it just shows the level of intent they really put into making the original work so well and stay memorable.

(compare SH1 to SH2 and it shows the difference between accidentally bad, and "strange but intended")

It was good, especially in the context of the narrative, and double especially for 2001. Compare to RER (2002) acting. Which is, of course, SLIGHTLY better than the Jill Sandwitch edition, but still falls flat half the time.

I thought she did a top job. All of them in fact.

She sounded corny in the original like the master of unlocking letters.

Yeah I know of the whole argument it was intentional. I still think it was awful though and didn't in any way enhanced the experience. As I said, to each their own, I much prefer the new VA.

personally i hope they remove the letter entirely for afghanistan releases of the game to avoid the unfortunate implication that she can read and write.
