Combat is frustrating
Enemies have unavoidable attacks (looking at you mannequins), the dodge move is clunky, running away just isn't an option when in enclosed buildings (so half the game) and ammo is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ scarce that you're forced to use the jank melee system. The combat reminds me so much of Homecoming that i'm convinced the devs played that game and went 'okay lets just do that!'
Inb4 "it's survival horror, combat is supposed to suck and ammo is rare!" Yeah silent hill 4, a game mostly focused on melee combat had encounters feel at least tolerable. Even with the unavoidable ghosts feeling fair to fight and figured out back in 2004 on the ps2; even those devs knew that 'maybe we should give some ammo to the player.'

Post edit: I have changed the title from 'worse than the original' to 'combat is frustrating' because that is what i meant in the title. Also thanks to those who weren't ♥♥♥♥♥ in the comments when it came to suggestions about how to better approach combat, your suggestions were helpful.

I think that was literally just an LLM bot answering lol. OP are you playing on standard or hard? Key is to hit them like 2 times, stand back and wait until they do their attack and then attack again. Of course every enemy is different but that's the general gist.

If you can't run away dodge backwards.

Standard/normal combat difficulty. Hit twice, run away, rinse and repeat?

Try to wait until they do their attack and then run and try to attack twice. Then move back or dodge/move around them. I'm currently playing on hard and getting my ass kicked but usually you should be fine if you just wait and watch until they finished their attack, go and attack and then move back and repeat.

OP needs to check with a optometrist because his rose-coloured glasses are too strong. OG silent hill 2 was known for many things but good combat was not one of them. It was already considered not great back in 2001.

Op never said any of that. He was/is just frustrated about the difficulty. Can you not read?

Ammo is not scarce? lol. But I agree about the fact you can't run away. I don't think the combat is bad, but there is too much emphasis on it.

He probably means it was considerably easier in the original, i can count on one hand how many times i had to heal in the original. In this one i'm getting destroyed. And i mean i didn't really like Callisto Protocols combat either, Bloober seem to have based the combat on what was in that game, some enemies though like the mannequin have very quick hard to read attacks where just getting hit once utterly chunks your HP to critical.

Also what's up with having to stomp an enemy 20 odd times when they're down to actually make sure they don't get back up a minute later? Iirc in the original you only had to stomp them a couple of times, maybe i'm not remembering that part correctly though.

What are you talking about? its Callisto Protocol combat. Only the most bestest, awesomeest, unique and streamlined combat system ever!

Take your words back, heathen!

that just looks like ai breaking strat from speedrunner. the remakes combat is worse because its a rip off of calisto protocol and that game is terrible, plus its unrealistic that james is magically a pro fighter who is able to dodge attacks like a ninja and swing a wooden plank like hes barry bonds. not even leon from re2 had moves like james and he was a policeman lol

use your dodge, they usually attack after the 2nd or 3rd hit from you (mannequins a bit more). I rarely ever run, sometimes I just dodge backwards twice in a row to reset the fight.

For a game trying to make you feel scared, it works. the mannequins could definitely be better but its insanely tense trying to fight when you have just enough ammo. I find the movement in the game to be actually pretty good if you use it like you would in dark souls.

If you're playing on Light/Standard, just hit twice, dodge the counter, repeat until dead.

Hard is another matter altogether. There were plenty of times when it seemed like the enemies countered with a basically instant, completely undodgeable counterattack, especially the mannequins. My best advice for Hard mode is, if you're not enjoying the game, drop it down to Standard and do Hard on NG+ with the Chainsaw.
