Combat is frustrating
Enemies have unavoidable attacks (looking at you mannequins), the dodge move is clunky, running away just isn't an option when in enclosed buildings (so half the game) and ammo is ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ scarce that you're forced to use the jank melee system. The combat reminds me so much of Homecoming that i'm convinced the devs played that game and went 'okay lets just do that!'
Inb4 "it's survival horror, combat is supposed to suck and ammo is rare!" Yeah silent hill 4, a game mostly focused on melee combat had encounters feel at least tolerable. Even with the unavoidable ghosts feeling fair to fight and figured out back in 2004 on the ps2; even those devs knew that 'maybe we should give some ammo to the player.'

Post edit: I have changed the title from 'worse than the original' to 'combat is frustrating' because that is what i meant in the title. Also thanks to those who weren't ♥♥♥♥♥ in the comments when it came to suggestions about how to better approach combat, your suggestions were helpful.

I have over 100 hundred handgun ammo and just got to brookhaven. Also you have to use specific directional dodges to avoid certain attacks like the step back dodge avoids different attacks from the side step one.

Do you find more ammo outside of the apartments? 3 hours in of scouring the town before getting the handgun and looking around the apartments i only have 20 bullets using ammo VERY rarely on normal diff.

> Enemies have unavoidable attacks

There are dodges that have i-frames, lol.

I think the mods should just put the trolls who pretend "I got never hit while playing on hard" and this one in a confined forum space and let them hate on eachother.

You can find ammo by breaking out car windows, as well. I had lots of handgun ammo by the time I quit and I haven't even found the handgun.

I've been breaking car windows and building windows and often find bullets and heals in them. Sometimes you find supplies just on a bench. You're also heavily rewarded for exploring specific buildings that aren't marked with circle/main objective stuff. Try to memorize the wind up animations of the monsters to know what attack to expect.

in the hospital I had 100+ bullets, 20 hp drinks and 20 syringes, I like the melee combat, it feels weighty and brutal, there have been times I was hit because I didn't dodge correctly but there are definitely not unavoidable attacks. I love to hit/stomp everything when it's down, and I often give downed enemies a smack on my way passed just to make sure they won't get up (even though the enemies scripted to get up still do so after smacking them several times while they are down). It's definitely not worse than the original, combat in the original sucked balls. (which is why 3 was my favourite, cut it's combat was way better even though it's still clunky)

Let's not be silly. This game throws a lot of ammo and healing items at you as you progress (iI'm currently n Brookhaven and I have over 100 pistol ammo and like 8 healing items) and you can walk away from pretty much any 1v1 melee fight without taking any damage by learning enemy attack patterns, which are not complicated in this game, and dodging/counterattacking appropriately.

Sure...gameplay wise it's not difficult but it's very immersive in terms of level design coupled with the themes.

I didn't say it wasn't immersive? The stuff outside of combat is pretty good

I think that was literally just an LLM bot answering lol. OP are you playing on standard or hard? Key is to hit them like 2 times, stand back and wait until they do their attack and then attack again. Of course every enemy is different but that's the general gist.

If you can't run away dodge backwards.

Hospital Other Side right now, Hard Difficulty, more than a dozen healing items, around 50 ammo after the boss fight which drains your ammo a lot, haven't died once. Dodges have i-frames, enemies telegraph their attacks pretty good, combat and movement is responsive. Also, i dont avoid enemies, i like to fight them, so be sure i defeated every single enemy i found, even those that are easily avoidable in the streets, and still swimming in resources.

Im seeing a clear skill issue case here.

same I killed everything, im only playing on normal though which I assumed most people would play first, there are so many health items if you look everywhere. I always run the opposite direction from where I'm supposed to go in games like this.

Standard/normal combat difficulty. Hit twice, run away, rinse and repeat?
