How Well Does It Hold Up as a 2024 Game?
Never played the original Silent Hill 2. The visuals are obviously better but was interested to know more about the gameplay mechanics. In terms of gameplay, is this one a copy of the original, or did the dev team incorporate any innovations of the past 20 years (AI / upgrades / weapon variety / etc / etc).

For example, I appreciate the effort put into that System Shock remake, but the gameplay, for my personal taste, felt very, very dated.

Thanks,

Combat & Enemy AI are much better then the OG. The game has one of the best monsters of the year but I won;t say what it is cuz its a spoiler.

They put in all the innovations but let you change settings to retro or no hud if you want to play hardcore horror experience.

Better off reading steam reviews. These forums are inhabited by the same person on 5 different troll accounts spreading lies, bs and flame bait.

We all know who Pyramid head is... christ almighty.

He's not just a monster of the year either, he's one of the most known monsters of gaming.

AI and combat are passable at best, the OG didn't put focus on combat compared to the remake which has too much of it.

Well to the vast majority of gamers nowadays he is still a mystery. He was to me since I never got to play the original Silent Hill games so figuring out what pyramid head actually was was quite crazy to me.

Not really, plenty of content creatures covered the plot of silent hill 2 back to front it’s a 20 year old game. Pyramid head is iconic and is more or less a mascot for the series.

For the series, yes.
Which is very niche as you probably know.
The vast majority of gamers nowadays haven't even touched the franchise at all.

Even the biggest video about pyramid head has like 3 million views which is but a drop in the ocean, especially with how big gaming is nowadays.
Pretty well, at least by comparison. It really depends on your standards and preferences. If you like Silent Hill then I would encourage you to give it a try.
Everyone was skeptical of this game, and yet it exceeded expectations. Pretty cool. Did Silent Hill 2 even need a remake? Probably not (do any games). But with how well it was done I'm glad it's here.
Just my opinion though.

It’s not niche, the series has been around for decades nearly 10 games in total. Just like most who’ve never played a resident evil game before would know what it’s about. Actually that 3 million should tell you that it’s not niche.

Pyramid Head being a mascot to the series is the problem. Everyone knows his design is iconic but his lore which was only meant to be tied to Silent Hill 2 has caused people to have a conflicting idea of the characters lore and spread misinformation.

Silent Hill is a very niche franchise, Resident Evil is arguably more recognised than any of the Silent Hill games. I've met more people that knew more about RE because Silent Hill in comparison has a cult following. Not to mention RE has more games and arguably better marketing. No one is exactly fond of Konami as they are with Capcom.

....I get the slight feeling you have no idea what niche actually means. Hell, the horror genre itself is pretty niche itself.

The amount of games doesn't really matter, especially when you take a look at when the last one came out and how "well" it has been received. Similar to Dead Space.

And most people who have never played Resident Evil only know about "zombies" that's it. Similar to Silent Hill where most people will know that Pyramid Head is a thing (I knew about him before playing any game). They know he exists, they connect him with silent hill but they have NO idea what he actually is.

Idk why we are even discussing it. It's a weird hill to die on.

I agree with that, technically it made some sense in homecoming considering the plot of that game but it didn't need to be 1:1 of James.

RE is known more now because of the amount of releases especially now. You forget Konami pretty much iced the IP for several years doesn't make it niche, heck they used it for Panchinko machines.

Masahiro Ito had designed an entirely different Pyramid Head called 'The White Hunter' for the purpose of reusing an iconic design but with an entirely new meaning separate from James which Homecoming could have used albeit didn't. Seeing as Red Pyramid Head is exclusively meant for James, it's why there was also backlash for DBD releasing the Silent Hill chapter with Cheryl as the survivor instead of James; and even more dislike for the fact he became a cosmetic set instead.

And no I haven't forgotten, after all there was an entire disaster around P.T. and Hideo Kojima being fired. Their announcements for the revival of the SH franchise a few years ago became a huge deal. So far though, only the remake has been successful and we're still waiting on the movie and Silent Hill F.

Resident Evil has always been more known than Silent Hill even years ago since the RE games had more to offer for their players, it's also hard to get into Silent Hill when their games aren't easily accessible. It's why you'll find most fans talking about Silent Hill have no actual idea what they're talking about because they haven't played the games.
