The point was there was something malevolent about her. Even in the script it was coming off almost as seductive. That was the point but they seemed to really missed that with this remake.
I'll just skip cut scenes with Mangela, and anyone saying we want to just wank over maria sorry if you have not played the original you would not understand what we mean, seriously stop being know it all's who think you know how we are and just listen to us for once instead of being deaf to what is being said and assuming. This franchise is all about psychology of someone trapped in a purgatory for their sins, and every person they meet has a role to play. if they do not match their role, it changes things a LOT.

They did really good with the ambiance sfx. I agree though the fog isn't nearly as nerve racking as the original was.
