Just go to load and see how long ago the game made a checkpoint save.
It's really not much of thing in this game. It auto saves quite a bit. Like during moments when something you do triggers a bunch of monsters you'll see the check point save icon in the bottom right. Most of the time when I check the load screen while playing there is a checkpoint at most a few mins back.
^ Limited ability to save is used to increase the tension of certain moments because if you die you very realistically lose something that's tangible to you the player.
It used to be worse, the early Resident Evil games actually required you to find an Ink Ribbon item to be able to save which meant you were limited to when and how often you could save your game.
I'm going insane!!!
If you are simply going to get one part for puzzle with tons of enemies nearby there are no auto saves. It makes it interesting when you play on hard.
