What do strange photos mean?

The figure is clear, which most likely means the serial number of the photo, but the captions and the image themselves... I can't believe that this is just an ordinary collection without a background. Does anyone know anything about this?

I think so too, but what was this life like? I remember a photo with the caption the beginning of my career and their crumpled sheets. Was James a writer like Harry Mason?
