Silent Hill 2 movie
So i had completely missed this but apparently there is going to be a movie called Return to Silent Hill that is based on this game and it should be coming this year (i read somewhere that in october? But can't find it anymore and it's kinda late now and people speculate it's gonna release next year). Although... "Director Christophe Gans confirmed to IGN that the new movie will follow the plot of Silent Hill 2 while also modernizing the story."
So, any thoughts? Are you gonna go watch it? I personally think i'm gonna give it a chance and go with an open mind

Eh...no expectations as per usual. Thats the only way to go into any "modern" movie experience, to view it unbiased as a piece of art. Also, it'd be some catharsis (hah) if the director was confirmed to be a fan of the Silent Hill games like the old series director was. The first SH movie wasn't great, but the amount of love for the sets, designs, and so on were v obvious and gave it a charm other adaptations don't have.

If they keep it largely a 1:1 adaptation of SH2 then I can see it being a good movie.

Just don't change too much and any changes they do make, make them relevant and it'll be decent.

If it's anything like the original Silent Hill movies, it will be absolute ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ that completely ignores the actual lore of the games.

If, and I say very strongly IF they stick to SH2 story, then it could be great.

EDIT: After watching the video, the fact they say they are "modernizing it, giving the audience today what they want is a HUUGE red flag to me. I say this because of the decline in actual horror. Everything today is shallow slop, jumpscare after jumpscare. When is the last truly and genuinely terrifying horror movie that wasn't just shallow piss-poor writing strewn together with in your face constant jumpscares? This whole "modern audience" is a huge red flag. It also indicates to me that they don't really care about the wants of the long time Silent Hill fans at all with this movie. That same language is why I was somewhat skeptical (and pleasantly surprised) of the remake.

But there is some language there that is huge red flags for me, and I am highly, highly skeptical of this movie right now.

I can see it being a decent horror movie, but a mid to bad Silent Hill adaption. The first movie was the same. If it wasn't marketed as a Silent Hill film and had a few things changed to make it an original that just happened to be similar to Silent Hill, it would've been great.

The end of the first SH movie was a near perfect setup for a sequel. Imagine Sean Bean going back into Silent Hill looking for his missing wife. It would have been an interesting parallel to the games.

But no, we got SH Revelations instead. As much as I like SH3, no amount of star power you bring in will redeem this script. That scene in the car where Heather explains the story to Vincent made me die inside.

I will watch the new movie, but my expectations are low.

Silent hill movies are awful and ruin everything. Games only for me. I have no expectations other than trash

Even some of the games are questionable. Any game after 5 just destroys the lore and what the first 4 built up.

I completely agree with you on the movies. I am highly skeptical but I will watch it just to see.

Well at least the bad silent hill games can be silly. I feel like a bad game is always more enjoyable than a bad movie. Idk if its good ill get my wife to watch it with me because some of the stuff ive told her about SH2 shes been curious about

I don't know much about this new version, but the previous movies were directed by a guy who literally said that Harry Masons care for his daughter basically made him a woman. He was very misogynistic (look up documentaries about the making of the movies) he made every character a female and when he got push back that there was no men in the movie, he added more BS screen time for sean beans character (sean bean was great, his character just wasn't written well). He never understood the story of silent hill and thought it was all about a cult. Alyssa is actually good, not evil like she was portrayed. He butchered the names of characters Hard, they added a high pitch frequency effect any time the flashlight was on camera and it bothered a lot of people that could hear it, like my girlfriend. Just ton of bad choices.

I'll reserve judgement for the movie, but honestly any movie based on a game these days is literal hot garbage and a cash grab.

EDIT: Never mind, just saw the trailer, they are bringing back the same guy, I expect nothing but the hottest of garbage.

All I can say about that is YIKES. yeah, if the same guy who was behind the original 2 films, is also behind this one...walp. There goes any optimism I had about it.

Now I will say, to be fair, a lot of Silent Hill IS because of a cult, The Order--the original SH1 game about the cult trying to bring both parts of Alessa together so that she might birth their God. But the suffering and pain and immolation that Alessa went through was manifest in Silent Hill, I am assuming because of her pseudo magical blood and assisted because Silent Hill being built on an old native american burial ground.

So the cult IS a strong part of SH lore, but the town itself has very specific things it does; we see this not just in SH2, but we see this in the original AND in 3. And later 4 as well.

But you need look no further than Pyramid Head being present, to know this guy has zero knowledge about the story of Silent Hill. I said before, it feels like the movies just plastered things that are in Silent Hill together, hoping something would land. And instead it fails utterly.

'Same thing he failed at the last two movies. He doesn't understand that Silent Hill as a town is it's own entity and that the monsters represent the weight of guilt and sin specific to the game.

Any time I see Pyramid Head in any game/movie besides 2 I know someone somewhere missed the point.

There really is going to be a new one? I did love the first movie (aside from the end part, which i found very weird). I will def give it a try but keeping expectations very low. I like the old 2000's vibe that movies had and new movies are horrible at actually giving games or books a good adaptation.

I've actually never seen silent hill movies but i do 100% agree that it is just impossible for people to try and get an actual faithful adaptation

There's only one good Silent Hill movie and that's the very first one. Anything made nowadays will be riddled with the agenda. No thanks.
