Worth it to buy? and how scary?
Hey all,

I've never played SH2 nor any of the originals but their influence on horror and quality is undeniable. I didn't have much hype for the remake because it wasn't my cup of tea, but I've stumbled across some gameplay and whatnot and I'm quite curious to give it a shot.

The only horror games I've tackled are the Resident Evil Remakes, and Dead Space Remake. I also dabbled a bit in Outlast, but it was really intense for me. Which leads me to SH2R, from what I've read, the game is pedal to the floor and doesn't let up for a second, I'm wondering if an unseasoned horror player like me can survive it. I've read about a few people who claim to be quite desensitized to horror games in general and even they can only play in sints of half to an hour. So... it seems like it isn't for the faint of heart

EDIT: I just bought it... let's see, any additional recommendations for difficulty or mods for performance? or in general?

This game is quite different. While there’s still horror and suspense, you’re not constantly terrified, and only occasionally get small jump scares during the session. It hits the perfect balance, so you don’t feel the need to stop or want to turn the game off, allowing you to enjoy everything the game has to offer.

It’s easily one of the best, if not the best, games of the genre that I’ve ever played.

I played the original Silent Hill 2 when it was first released, but I didn’t remember the game being this good. I'm really impressed by the story and fully immersed in it.

If you want a terrifying immersive experience use this settings
Use Retro Setting = no hud or button prompts
No firing/aiming reticle Cross-air,
No magnetic aim
No health indicators
Combat Difficulty = hard

You can adjust all these settings when you want to adjust to what you want gameplay wise

I'm a longtime fan of the SH games. Honestly, I'm finding the game to be pretty intense. It captures the atmosphere and dread that made the original SH2 scary. And then goes a step farther, imo, with more challenging and varied combat.
Like, it's essentially the same monsters as the original. But used in some different ways. Like the mannequins can climb walls, sneak attack you and run off. And you can end up in tight areas with 5+ enemies at once.
I actually started the game on hard and knocked it down to normal. I could see someone who finds it too intense starting on normal and having the option to go down to easy. It'd still be scary and you'd still get a great single player story.

Ah I didn't know the game had additional settings like that, I was more referring to whether a novice horror player like me could handle it in general or not, and if the quality of the game in general is good. From what I've read people had no faith in the team behind it but then most of the people seem to enjoy it. I dug a bit more and it seems like people are complaining about the combat being clunky and unintuitive as well as low enemy variety, but I'd just like to know if a regular joe can handle the game or will die in a heart attack during the process lol

So 100% worth it to give it a shot and then mess around with the settings until I find something that works?

I am a big fan of RE2remake, this isn't much harder than that however it is more creepy. I think, for me, this game is right on the perfect precipice of being scary enough that you feel it but not too scary to the point where some might stop playing. But that's just how I feel. I'd honestly recommend you to just take the plunge, the survival horror genre doesn't have high budget games anymore and even RE is going down the action route once more with RE4R so this will probably be enjoyable if you liked RE2R, just more creepy and with a much more serious story/atmosphere.

Wait for a discount. It’s not worth $70. $40-$50 is more reasonable.

Oh yeah forgot about prices. In my steam store it's 33 usd, regional steam pricing. 70$ is kindda high. But I'd say it's got the same amount of content as RE2R (maybe more even, due to the multiple endings and hidden easter eggs) so take that as you will.

long time fan here (bought a psone in 1999 because of SH1)
and i can definitely say its worth it.
the game have some stutters so if you are having problem with that, wait for a patch, which is being worked on now.
fear is subjective, what scares one person might not be scary for another. this game though doesn't try to scare you with cheap jumpscares, but with creepy atmosphere and sound effects.
give it a try and if its not for you, you can always refund

I bought it at $70, for reference.
I don't buy a lot of games, especially recently, and especially at full price. But I was looking forward to this one, and even moreso when early reactions were very positive.

I was about to say, 70 seemed a bit steep, but how many hours of content am I getting? A quick google search tells me about 15-20ish hours, so a RE4R run, and that is a game I got a ♥♥♥♥ ton of mileage out, nearly 200 hours

Go onto my abandonware and get the original.

On normal difficulty my run was 13 hours. That's just a normal run without trying to 100% or get any specific ending or the ng+ unlockables, however RE2 relies more on survival horror mechanics so it has replay value due to optimizing the map and your objectives and resource management which gives it some noticeable replayability, whereas RE4's arsenal of weaponry, upgrades, and mercenaries easily has a ♥♥♥♥ ton of replayability. I'd say this game is as replayable as RE2R, maybe slightly less maybe slightly more on harder difficulties and getting the NG+ endings or stuff like that. I wouldn't say it's as replayable as RE4R though.
phildor Oct 20, 2024 @ 6:31am
I wouldn't pick it up expecting hundreds of hours of replayability. I'm at hour 18 and I'm nearly at the end (Lakeview Hotel).

First playthroughs range from 17 - 23 hours depending on if someones exploring the town, looking for secrets and if they got button prompts on for pickups. It also depends if your going Hard Puzzles & Hard Combat or not.

You then have the 8 separate endings & achievements. More endings then the original.

For reference the original game had a average completing time was 8 hours yet people sank many hours into getting all the endings.

I got deluxe edition from GMG and say it was worth it but I'm a Silent Hill and retro Resident evil fan.
