Either thats hypervolic, or you havent spend much reading or listening news about games.
if you mean too much combat, the actual criticism ive seen more often is that the combat is boring, which is fair criticism and very different to just "too much". too much, but good, is often enjoyable.
again, if you mean "too many", then thats also a bit strange:
people most often when complaining about puzzles, is not about the amount, but actually about their quality: or they find them too difficult, or to easy.
the only moment in which the amount can become annoying, is if they arent spaced properly, and become a chore: that is also a valid criticism, relative to the quality of the game design.
thats again, is relative to the quality of gameplay: a two hour long game can feel "too long" if its boring, unoriginal, unpolished, etc.; it will feel "too short", if the opposite is true.
when people complain about a game about how long it is, is often actually about how boring it feels.
again, valid, if you understand where the criticism comes from.
same: good game design, no matter if the game is "linear" or "free roaming - open world", if the design is good, the player will be able to orient him or herself towards the right direction easily, or find something to do relative to it; if the level design is bad, confusing, and poorly "self-explained", or is missing clues, etc, then that would lead to needing an external guide or help.
that can still be part of good game design, and an example of that was legend of zelda a link to the past: the way the game was designed, and the context in which it was sold, had the purpose of making players explore, get lost, and try to discover new things with official guides and comments from other players.
obs thats not the case of this game.
same with the "boring" and "chore" comments: you first need to understand what they are actually about.
you can have both, and i agree: a game can be both long and have good replay value, but that is also part of good game design.
with a mediocre or bad game design, is common to only get more or less one of those ok, and failing in the other. either from lack of resources, lack of time for dev, lack of care, all or a combination of those.
the witcher 3 is a very long game, but it has very good replay value, and you can either keep playing and find stuff to do with your first file, or make a new one and start from scratch and have a different experience if you play using other weapons, spells, make different choices, etc.
this game deserved a lot better, but it seems konami still doesnt care much about the franchise, or good game design.
you dont need to play a game to understand its gameplay if you can see a "play-through": are you unable to understand how a game works, if you watch a friend playing it?
if you play games, you will get if its good or bad, and why, or if it could be a lot better and needs to be "polished" and fixed.
About the level design, I disagree, if you orient yourself and know what to do too easily then it's a boring level design, and i never feel disoriented in the game btw...
And the "game feels like a chore" Is something I never understood, why? Idk...
And about the "I've never seen a game so criticized" Was about those reasons, I've obviously seen game more hated, but not for things so basic like the lenght or combat...
I'm sure they loved monetising it
It got some criticism, including from myself about this "modern audience" approach, wokeness, censorship and whatnot... but despite that, it is a great game.
The Steam review was Overwhelmingly Positive for the entire week of release.
What ? Dude every game that gets released nowadays that is even remotely popular has people hating on it for whatever reasons.
Thats no rocket science or "what should be or what shouldn't". You either like it or not. What is troubling tho is people who hate this game living in this forum for days to rub their garbage opinions on other peoples faces who enjoy it.
