not enough ammo not enough health items
are we supposed to dodge 90% of attacks for the playthrough on standard difficulty or try to run from enemies as much as we can?

I think there's plenty even on hard.

I played way too conservative making the game way harder than it is. I'm pretty close to the end (I guess) and in hard I'm like well over 400 gun ammo, over 60 shotgun ammo, never used the rifle, never used syringe (30+) and I have like 45 health bottles.

You should not fight if you don't have too. You can make a recon first then reload.
Some enemies are easy to melee. As long as there's just one, anything but nurse and the metal bar nurse is very manageable.

Not really, you just need to get their timing and use the plank and pipe a lot. Try to shoot them in the knees and then go smack them. I'm not a skillful player and have lots of ammo and health after leaving the hospital.

There is a handful of segments where it's just better to run from the enemies. But in general this game is way way waaaaaaay more generous with ammo and health than what it feels like at first.

I'm playing also on Standard and I feel I am not particularly great at dodging them and have 17 drinks and 15 syringes after one of the combat heavy late game areas and I have not struggled with ammo and health since super early in the game.

Even pipe nurses you can manage if you get the proper feel for their parries and swing patterns. It's knife nurses you need to shoot or avoid. They're way too dangerous to go toe to toe with.

Oh I agree. The pipe nurse I know them by heart at this point. But they are super tanky and they take some practice. The knife nurse are crasy. They have that 5 attack string attack that is just nuts.

I’m playing on hard and have plenty of ammo and healing items. I’m in the hospital right now with over 100 handgun bullets.

They should have made it harder imo. Maybe patch in a nightmare mode because hard isn’t hard enough. It feels like what normal mode should have been.

Early game, you should approach solo enemies with just melee weapons alone. Especially the Lying Figures. You can't just beat them until they go down like the original. Pay close attention to their counters. 2 hits and then evade out. Wait for a big attack and go in from the back and whack away.

If you see a down enemies or crawling enemy, whack them first. Do it twice and they won't come back up. They will take a lot more to kill if they get up.

Mannequins are a bit trickier, but they usually go down in only 3-4 hits.

Use guns only when you have multiple enemies in the same room.

Avoid most enemies on the streets.

Do not approach nurses with melee.

If you're using shotgun, just shoot once to down them, and stomp them when they go down. Same with rifle.

LOL, I often had 150 plus handgun ammo, WAY TOO MANY health items on normal. They throw it at you, which is in line with SH2, the original did the same thing, and didnt starve you for resources. Get good.

Save your bullet for nurses or rooms with more than one enemy.

You have to be really bad at the dodge to run out of healing items in this. I think I had 15+ syringe, and 30+ health drinks by the time I finished on standard. Ammo is a bit more limited but you still have plenty if you bother to check drawers.

its a classic survival horror mechanic, resource management
like the original resident evil, you're not supposed to have massive amount of ammo, especially in the beginning!

Wellcome to survival horror. That is the whole point of it: having shortage of resources like ammo and health items and the need to manage them carefully. That‘s the genre.

This comes from a person who hoards bullets and health items like their life depends on it. Learn the monster's attack patterns. You can go far with mainly just a melee weapon, makes it so that you can conserve ammo for situations where you really don't want to get close to something. Or just pop a bullet and finish a monster with melee if you want to.
As for health... the game does give you plenty. There were moments i was drinking the bottles like they were juice and yet i had like 12 syringes and 30 bottles when i beat the game. And i pretty much attacked everything that moved. I'll say it again; it's all about the attack patterns.
Although it did take a while to start to collect the health items, in the beginning i had just enough and a bit extra.
