tried the chainsaw in new game plus..

I was kind of curious how the gameplay is with NG+ as, from what I read, you are now given the chainsaw right at the start.
Well, first impression, not so great! First, the weapon is quite loud so if you want to i.e. smash a window, you have to put up with the noise of the chainsaw for 10 seconds or so until James puts it away (where I might add but this is another discussion..). Every little bug that's near to you makes James get his big chainsaw so you are now listening to pam-pam-pam-pam-pam-pam which kinds of ruins the whole experience.
Not to mention the chainsaw is freaking overpowered i.e. you destroy enemies instantly. Not sure about the later enemies like the nurses but at least the enemies from the first levels.
The chainsaw kind of breaks immersion for me and this is not a good thing.

I also felt I was in a constant hurry and didn't have the patience to read everything like I did in the original playthrough. So I abandonded the new game plus in the west side apartaments area.

I think I'll revisit the game after a few months BUT I'm 100% sure I'll not be using the chainsaw.

I used the chainsaw for a NG+ no guns run (fired one shot to get a certain item) and won't be using it again either for a couple of reasons. First is, as you quite rightly said, it's ludicrously OP and there's no challenge at all in bosses going down in a couple of hits even on Hard combat. And the other are the animations - they're fun for the first few times but having to dodge out of the unique animations kind of breaks my mood in the game a fair bit. A third, and rather minor, reason is it can be a bigger pita than other melee weapons in not aiming quite where you'd like if it has two options - say a corpse on the ground and a cupboard to smash open. Happens with all melee weapons but the chainsaw has that slightly stranger animation which I found easier to mis-target with.

It's fun for a NG+ smash all the things run but definitely not the thing if you're hoping for some tension from the combat.

Just press L2 or LT so James points the gun towards so you don't need to hear the chainsaw anymore. Jesus....

I like having it to use on the bosses for a no ranged run, but even then I mostly used the pipe. I remember using the chainsaw on PS2 as well as (vaguely) the hyper spray. The chainsaw always sounds super cool in theory but as you've all already stated the constant noise, animations that get old after a while, how bulky it is, and how awkward James handles it makes me never want to use it.

Anyway, what are L2 or LT? Is this on some type of controller?

If your chainsaw is out and you don't want/need it to be you should be able to just enter "aim mode" with your ranged weapon (LT on an Xbox Controller, L2 on a PS controller) which will make James immediately put away the chain saw to bring out the ranged weapon.

That's what I get for trying to help someone online. I'm talking about aim mode. I can see you have played the game using keyboard, but how come you don't know what LT or L2 stands for? Do you live inside a cave?

Anyways the fact that you have never realized you can simply use aim mode to stop the chainsaw mode speaks for itself. Have you finished the game on easy mode, haven't you? Or did you simply google the puzzle solutions?

In my view, I love the sound of the chainsaw, it's a chainsaw after all.

You're being dense and willfully not understanding what he is saying. Clearly hes telling you to aim "to have james point the gun towards" instead of having the gun in his jacket.

you dont have to use the chainsaw. even if you want the achievement you can pick it up and with the first other weapon unequip it.

also when you use the chainsaw and you aquired your first handgun you can always just tap the handgun (right click mouse) and that makes him put away the chainsaw and he now runs wiht the handgun in hand. even if you dont want to use the gun for the no ranged weapon achievement you can just use the gun to unequip the chainsaw quickly. that way you kill the sound unless you actually use the chainsaw.

and lastly sometimes the stupid animation triggers where james does some chainsaw poses. you can also skip these with a tap on the gun

and i agree the sound is annoying

Super weapons are for silly playthroughs like in resident evil. Of course they break the games is many ways including immersion.

i know you didnt mean no harm but just your mindset is kinda weird when you think about it. if you feel like the game is a chore, even if only in ng+. why do you bother with it. "less of a chore" implies it is still one, even if lessened. why spend money to do something you feel like is a chore.
