Was the original better?
I have never played the original so I do not have nostalgia goggles going into this. Was it better? I have tried my hardest to like this game but damn its boring af (in my opinion). For the reputation silent hill has, I really had expected much more. I have played 7 hours, so far in brookhaven hospital basement (otherworld) & I am just i am really considering letting this game go. The gameplay loop is as mundane as it gets. Callisto protocol combat (not a compliment of course) mixed with go to new area, do fetch puzzle, go to new area, another fetch puzzle & just seemingly repeats over & over again. The story is also weak. This is of course my opinion. Was the original better than this? I don't know if they changed this remake or what but this has been such a let down

The original is definitely better because the original game was much horror than this remake. And also there are other things that distinguished the original games that are missing in this remake.
And it is impossible to get bored of the original game because it uses a dynamic camera perspective, but in this remake they have used this generic perspective that they want to shove it down our throats since resident evil 4 (2005).
But it's definitely possible to get bored of that gameplay.. just look at the clip in the post above yours. :sadpug::Horse:

The combat was not bad in the original, it was designed to fit the horror experience. In a horror game, combat should be difficult and challenging
I already responded to a similar comment earlier in this thread. The combat was not difficult and at times it was goofy enough to be immersion breaking, look at this clip for example:

This was intentional in these games, a horror game should not make the player enjoy combat because this will reduce his feeling of horror.

It is a niche genre anyway so hard to say, go play the original and see for yourself. My guess is you probably won't like it either, which is completely fine.

The tank controls from the original have aged like milk too.

People who complain about tank controls really do not get the game at all.

Firstly you are playing as an ordinary guy.

And not a tank. Ordinary people don't come to a full complete stop, spin 42 degrees to the left, lurch forward, gain momentum, and then walk before having to once more come to a full complete stop and turn 18 degrees to the right to continue on.

Troll harder.

ordinary people are not visiting towns like SH and killing and solving puzzles.

No doubt. They way they mishandled everything original was in this demake is absolutely abhorrent. Play original with Enhanced Edition on top, slowly and carefully , and then - if you're fine with stutters - play demake.

I wouldn't say that, but controls and gameplay style got old as hell. It's insane to think some defend they should have remade the game with the same boring gameplay and controls. So insane people said the same thing when they've released Resident Evil 2 remake.

Tank controls exist because of hardware limitation. And it worked extremely well for the time.

Silent Hill 2 got the remake it deserves. Amazing gameplay, graphics, and story/lore is even further improved. I just hope the future patch (already confirmed) fixes performance because it's quite atrocious at the moment.

if we go with the logic that tank controls where used because James is an ordinary guy.
how can you explain resident evil and metal gear solid both used well trained and experienced protagonists?
it was hardware limitation, nothing more nothing less.
and with the camera angles changing directions it was very disorienting to navigate the levels without the tank controls

some voice acting from the original was better (imo). Also, combat was worse in the OG, but in this they throw too many enemies at you. (with better combat).
I like the extra touches (Eddie's frost breath for instance) and the extra areas to explore.
Nothing beats the original (because that was the first one), but they did a terrific job with this remake and I am absolutely thrilled to see so many people enter the world of Silent Hill for the first time and really like it.
Maybe this is the injection the game series needs for more SH??? Who knows?

They definitely overdid the amount of enemies in certain areas and puzzles compared to the OG. This game takes way longer to progress through for sure and becomes repetitive after the 700th nurse encounter. They expanded on just about every puzzle from the OG + added 1 or 2 new puzzles before and after each one. At times it feels like it's dragging. I never felt it dragging when playing the OG. I can 100% see where you're coming from.

Agreed! Good points. Still I like this game, can wander in that town for hours, the atmosphere is spot on!

yeah the otherworlds of the other characters being hinted at more are so cool. i originally wondered why eddie's food of choice got changed to melted ice cream, but considering his otherworld's basically a freezer, thats the only food that you would find in there thats edible.

The original is absolutely better, and I absolutely understand it being boring. While I may not agree on a personal level, since I love the original, it is a very empty game, and the combat itself, while not the sort of action oriented combat of say, The Suffering, it's not as bad as everyone says it is, simple, but not "bad".
