Story explanation? (obvious spoilers)
So I've just beaten the game and I'm super confused. I was hoping it all would be explained by the end but if anything it's left me more puzzled.

Why does the world keep changing and nobody seems to be bothered.
Why is silent hill full of monsters
What is up with the pyramid heads (apart from looking awesome) especially that whole scene at the end.
Why is everyone nuts.
Why did Maria turn into a demon

etc etc. Do I need to have played the others or something? it feels like nothing was explained at all

It helps if you've read the new testament, but basically the game is saying a hail mary before doing a dukes of hazzard stunt near a lake.

common early 00s media trope, emphasizing profound / surreal revelation not phasing many people.

Why is silent hill full of monsters
psychic projection of inner demons onto other things. Each person sees personally tailored wonderland of their own perdition.

What is up with the pyramid heads (apart from looking awesome) especially that whole scene at the end.
trying to work out james' guilt complex and show him the monsters arent real, also violently punish james to the extent he feels he needs it.

Why is everyone nuts.
they aren't, it's just you only see the parts of them that are broken or dysfunctional enough to be used and exploited by silent hill.

Why did Maria turn into a demon
woman moment + she's a distorted echo of mary created from james' mind. Also probably a mary magdalene exorcism reference.

Do I need to have played the others or something? it feels like nothing was explained at all
don't wait on explanations, write your own

Tl;dr it's stan by eminem but a video game

I'll make a post later that goes in depth into the symbology and the story of the game, inso much as I can. I know my SH stuff, but I'll probably miss something. Hopefully it won't get overrun with trolls when I do.

In the meantime, there's some good youtube videos that go over SH2 in depth as well.

I agree with your point and most of your examples but jacob's ladder was clearly the main Masahiro ito and team silent's inspiration.

wait there's other stuff apart from the dog at the end ?

Silent hill is a weird town, in silent hill 1 they explained that there's a certain cult that is trying to bring their god to the world, any way. Silent Hill is a normal town, but it has 2 diferent layers, one is the fog world and one is the other world the rusty one, these worlds relate to the subconcious of the mind, dreams, nightmares, etc.

Let's say you killed someone, you feel guilt or maybe you feel happy, anyway this type of things can affect your mind, so when you go to silent hill the town knows that, in a way the town can even call you, but you will not arrive to the normal town, you'll arrive to the fog version of the town, the first layer, in this place things from the deepest parts of your mind will manifest, your fears, your guilt, your desires, etc.

that fog world has a cycle, in wich it changes to the rusty world, wich is more dangerous and weird, it's like a day and night, so in this game you are James, a man that killed his wife, he goes to silent hill to kill himself, but just when he arrives he collapses and his mind hides what he just did, it creates a lie in wich his wife died 3 years ago and just now recieves a letter from her, telling him to come to meet her in silent hill.

so every monster is a manifestation of what James has forgotten, his mind and the town are trying to remind him what he has done, along with a lot of his guilt, fears and desires.

it's like having a long long nightmare.

Pyramid head, is a real executioner that used to execute people in the old days of silent hill, in the story of the game james and his wife went to the town as tourist, there, James learns about the town lore and sees an image of pyramid head, that image strikes him deep, in the present it manifests as a shape of guilt and punishment for what he did.

The other people like Angela and Eddie are the same as James, each one with their own nightmare version, except for Laura, cause she's a Kid and kids tend to have imagination and a deep conection with the dream wolrd, she sees james but she doesn't see the monsters.

Let's say you vibechecked someone, you feel suss or maybe you feel bussin, anyway this type of things can affect your rizz

Silent Hill is like a living embodiment of a person's subconscious fear, guilt, and trauma. This embodiment makes itself physical in order to force the person experiencing Silent Hill to work through their trauma, and whether the outcome is good or bad depends on the choices the make during this critical nightmare of a time. That's the way I see it at least.

You are basically correct. There is some cult ♥♥♥♥ involved, thanks to Alyssa Gilespi from SH1, which caused the town to get to how it is now in the first place, and this is expanded upon in SH3 and SH4 to a degree. But i'd say this is a pretty succinct explanation.

actually alyssa is a mere echo fighter of alice in wonderland combined with the hissing noise, the true silent hill is actually kingdom hearts with the persona and silent hill franchises being offbrand offshoots of KH that can't afford hundred acre woods characters and were time travelled back into the 90s to come out first. See disney IP rights cost about as much as a real time machine so you can only have one or the other due to budgetary reasons.
