Coincidentally i think they started pushing 59.99 when PS4 came out.
I'm probably talking out of my ass but around the times those consoles came out is when prices went up.
Still nothing compared to SNES game prices in the early/mid 90s. I remember paying 79.99 for Final Fantasy 3
If you mean too much for a remake I agree, should cost $50 or less, devs already have a foundation/framework to copy then just "update" the game to "current standards"...
