Anyone know what the purpose of the handkerchief, i already know that angelas knife is used for the in water ending, and photo/letter is used for the leave ending but outside of just examining what other purpose does the handkerchief serve?

Nothing but a point added to score Maria ending. Handkerchief, just like the knife, when examined often, contributes to its respective ending. The Mary's dress in the room you found flashlight is another one you should check, as it reminds him of the past (Mary) and will contribute to him choosing Maria.
