The worst devs could ever do to a character like James is a sequel, lots of horror games fall for it, like the moment character goes through hell and in a sequel he is back at it. It ain't a horror anymore, but some action movie, but they do it mostly to attract audience back and not a proper storytelling I think.
For example Dead Space 2 would work just as well if there was no protagonist from the first game.
This. According to the director and James voice actor Guy Cihi (OG SH2 game) the In Water ending is canon.
And yes the word 'only' is in caps in the letter, it's also underlined
I've covered every inch of the map to get every doc, etc. and noticed this one as well which sure is telling. Also, when you start the game you can try to leave the town by turning back the way you came. You'll get a "No turning back now" achievement but you cannot leave. Your fate is sealed.
There was a few games in the past as well as some indie movies that inferred that once you take that first step into the venus fly trap there is no escape no matter what you try. Your fate was sealed and there was no hope for you. I wish I could remember the title of this one game where you are a professor checking out an urban legend where there's this cursed shack in the forest. I don't remember if it was haunted or a witch? The actual "best ending" would be to play the game in about 2 minutes. You just get to the door but never open it and go inside. Instead you turn around and never look back and that was the intended "good" ending. Once you opened the door and went in, the endings you would find would all be bad endings.
I think another thing to consider is all the other characters you find along the way in the game. They are also all caught in their own personal hell and cannot get out either. Seems the only true way out is to die. If you do get the Water ending the actual achievement is "Only Way Out" and I think that pretty much seals the deal.
James takes her corpse with him to Silent Hill. It's canon and you can see it in the back seat in SH2R, at least in NG+. It could mean any of the endings are canon but it also means James never gets out.
Every other ending is probable minus dog ending
