I agree with this. The nuances to combat make engagements far more difficult than the OG was. Added locations and puzzles make the game generally more difficult, which imo is a good thing.
I play on hard and after that fight I had more than 200 gun ammo, more than 15 shotgun ammo, something like 35 healing bottle and like 15 syringes (never used one).
Beat Lips wasn't easy.
I do FEEL like there is, but I admittedly haven't played the OG in a very long time. I seem to remember not having to conserve healing items *that much* in the OG, but I could be mis-remembering.
I do agree with you after completing my first run, that the healing items I didn't have to conserve much after I got out of Woodside apartments.
I think ammo is fairly scarce, IF you are using it a lot. If you lean more into melee, then you'll have plenty of ammo. Some of the bosses eat ammo a lot, and if you're not trying to be optimal with using it, I think you'll have plenty.
Playing on hard is also going to very much change how much you have to conserve ammo and health too. But overall it does seem there are more items, but the combat is also more difficult so I think it balances out. Difficulty is such a subjective thing, tbh, so how far the health items get you is really going to depend on how good you are at the combat in this game.
I was just wondering. Either way I'm having a blast with the game. Got me shook up quite a bit even having played the original and having plenty of items.
After the apartments I never really had any issues anymore, my rule of thumb was always the same, melee the bugs and the vomit guys, 4 handgun shots on the mannequins, 1 shotgun shell for the nurses (stomp afterwards) and my Rifle was just used on bosses. Finished the game with 50+ healing items, 100+ handgun ammo, around 20-ish shells and no rifle ammo (spent it all on the final boss).
This sounds about right if you're good with the melee. If you struggle with melee you're going to struggle with healing items though. And you can't really use your gun for every enemy or you're going to have ammunition problems I think.
What I found the biggest threat were the legs. Those ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ jump you out of nowhere and they are damn good at ambushing. I am ashamed to admit that I lost track of how many times those 4 legged asshats jumpscared the hell out of me.
As long as you melee the vomit guys, you will be okay, even on hard. I explored the entire game, killed everything I came across in my way except in 3 occasions.
1 - Silent hill, after you grab the keys to the apartments and everything gets windy;
2 - I ran past the corridors in the prison area with the spider mannequins;
3 - The shower area in the prison, I just grabbed the item and ran out of the place.
Besides those 3 places I killed absolutely everything like I described above and I was absolutely fine, and with the ammount of pistol ammo I finished the game with, you might even be able to shoot the vomit guys as well and not have issues.
I get too spooked when there's multiple things and just start blasting.
I started off on Retro mode for my first playthrough and it makes things a lot more immersive and more scary. .
