I will probably never try AW2.
it has a good balance of everything. A fair amount of action.
As for story yeah Alan wake as a series comes up short least silent hill 2 narrative is complete.
I will play SH2 remake next but I'm dreading dealing with crashes and stutters again. Besides, after reaching first town save I can tell that overall it doesn't look nearly as sophisticated and well designed as AW2, and not on the level of RE4 remake either. So my expectations are low, overwhelmingly positive rating is really delusional on steam. Maybe the game will get much better as I will progress further into the story, but I have a doubt about it.
AW2 was more intriguing and entertaining. Art direction’s insane, and I liked the creativity of the storyboard stuff in Wake’s levels. The set pieces are better and overall graphical fidelity/use of raytracing is more intuitive and stability’s better.
SH2 has a harder-hitting plot and more nuanced characters. I also preferred the combat, and the puzzles were pretty entertaining in a sort of escape room way. It’s also scarier and more oppressive overall without resorting to jump scares, although the retirement home section in AW2 was genuinely pretty freaky.
Both have 10/10 soundtracks and sound design.
Both have pacing issues and imo are over-long, with the subway in AW2 and Brookhaven hospital in SH2 remake being the most egregious examples. Replaying SH2 remake for the endings is not as attractive as it was with the significantly shorter OG game.
I think had I not regularly played the original SH2 over the past 20 years, the remake would have edged out AW2 based on the intrigue-factor, though so many games try to ape the plot twists that maybe it won’t have the same impact.
Who knows!
You go around the map doing puzzles to get all sorts of collectives that are quite cool. If you die without saving you have to do it all again. I couldn't put myself to go around collecting this ♥♥♥♥ again and gave up. This is just bad game design.
I don't think I'll be trying again, which is a pity since I like all games from Remedy.
