In the Stillness Ending, does James...*SPOILERS*
...drown himself like In Water, or does he survive?

The impression that I'm getting is that he was planning to kill himself like In Water, but Mary forgiving him and telling him that she would wait, coupled with the letter - which I'm guessing he does indeed read before he starts the car - encourages him to go on living. Even if he can't forgive himself, Mary wanted him to live on, for his own sake and Laura's, and if he truly loves her then I have no doubt he would honor her wishes and keep going on her behalf.

So I'm going out on a limb here and assuming he starts the car and sends it plummeting into the lake, with Mary's body in the backseat, letting Silent Hill be her final resting place, and then he meets up with Laura, gives her the letter, and they leave Silent Hill together on foot.

I could be dead wrong and he still kills himself to be with her, but I'm just getting the impression that, with Mary's blessing and encouragement, even if he can't forgive himself, he will at least try to keep going because it's what she wanted.

This is an interesting perspective but I believe with the information we have he killed himself as he does in "in water" ending. I'll watch the ending again to see if there's anything that I'm missing.

Edit: definitely kills himself

I just listened to it again and compared the sound ques in Stillness with the ones from In Water. There's a subtle change in Stillness that sounds like a car door opening.

I think James stepped out of the car before he put it in cruise and sent it over the balcony.

Interesting though if that was the intention it might have been better to have a dramatic pause then show James walking down the road at the end.
