Why did they use a 60 year old woman's face for Maria?

The game looks great but I'm completely at loss here about the character design choice. She looks like... Twice James's age. He looks like a confused little boy next to her. Some developer wanted to use his mom as a character in Silent Hill 2?

Wasn't she supposed to look young and pretty? She really was on OG Silent Hill 2. Why did they make her look like an old bag? Otherwise the game is fantastic, but I just don't get it why they had to change the look of a very important female character in this game.

Lately in remakes there is some rule to make the wives or other support characters old? Dead Space Remake had an old bag for the wife also. It's so weird lol

They don't look that old, and if anything look far better than the whole lizard people look from 2001 where they didn't have any defining unique appearance except for their CGI cutscenes. James looks much older compared to his original if anything, it makes sense considering he is modelled after his VA Luke Roberts who is in his 40s. Maria/Mary look younger next to a dishevelled man that suffered from alcoholism and killed his wife.

James actually looks younger than in the original, and Maria looks twice his age here. I just find this funny and not very attractive in an otherwise masterfully recreated game. Again, it does not matter if Cameron Diaz became 50 the old character was INSPIRED by her looks back then, she wasn't actually modelling for the game. We are simply comparing videogame characters. OG Maria to Remake Maria, OG James to Remake James. Regardless what tools are used or how developers mocap the characters. If they used an old bag for reference when they created the concept art for a videogame, that's on them.

The game looks great. But this small detail is quite funny. The game is like a beautiful girl looking at you, but then she gives you a wide smile and she shows her rotten teeth. That's the impression I get from this choice in art direction which is not fitting for a remake of the original. The same small detail, but matters.

Well I don't argue your preference in old women. I am totally fine if you like the Maria character in the Remake. I have my own opinion also, and shared it.

Good lord, there is NO way anyone prefers the OG one unironically lol.
Just look at those models, those animations. Barely any facial features. It looks so uncanny, actually creepy even. Which makes sense considering how old it is but if anyone actually prefers these robots I pray for them.

I disagree, James looks older in the original compared to the remake but still looks old enough to appear older than Mary/Maria in side by side comparison. I've seen plenty of men in their late 20s and they share more resemblance to remake James than his original counterpart.

And no Cameron wasn't modelling for the original game because they were using advanced CGI back then. This time around they used 3D face modelling and motion capture which they needed their voice actors for. I'd recommend checking this cool video out:

That being said, Maria's wide smile is meant to be eery and she's meant to look malevolent. Not sure what you mean about rotten teeth though, her teeth look fine as the same as everyone else's. The attention to detail wasn't missed, and having finished the remake I'd say they hit the ballpark with her characters portrayal compared to the original.

If age is relative, one would have to be like 3 yrs old to think Maria in this game looks 60! So I would have to chalk your cheeky little "preference in old women" up to your naivety regarding what 60 yr old women actually DO look like. And you're engaging in FAR more than just sharing an opinion here, you're very inaccurately describing the look of a main character.
