Money. Big gamer money.
It also didn't help that Kojima loved to delay his games a lot and that financially damaged Konami in some ways.
Konami: Hello, I like money
"What inspired you to bring back the silent hill series"
Konami: Money
That's basically the truth of it. Konami is still ultimately motivated by profit (and their personal greed) as with any other company. Silent Hill has been regaining popularity, and some executives thought bringing back the series was a good way to profit off of that.
Konami is a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ company, and I don't want to defend them, but I personally am glad the series is back and I will be buying the game. I just frankly hope it's good. Call me a consumer if you want, I just want to support silent hill, I don't want to support Konami. There's plenty of great games made by terrible developers and corporations, and silent hill is unfortunately a big example in this regard. I wish this wasn't being published by Ubisoft, but I also don't wanna look a gifthorse in the mouth when it comes to the greatest horror series of all time returning.
I genuinely hope at least half as much love will be poured into Konami's other dead franchises: Metal Gear Rising 2 would be obvious with the title's ever-increasing popularity online, and Castlevania is overdue in light of the Netflix series' popularity.
Newest popularity of Rising isn't that profitable for them since new fans will buy the game heavily discounted.
Maybe they hire Platinum to reboot it after some time but I don't think that it will happen.
MGR2 might actually work. The game is now better known thanks to the meme than it was on release. The Newfound popularity won't bring tons of revenue from the old product, but it might give enough relevance to a new product.
