How can I play online co-op?

I just got the game on the Steam sale and installed it and it crashes when I press space bar at the start screen. I googled and found the solution is to set your Steam friends to "offline" status, I tried that and it doesn't crash now and I can get to the main menu.

At the menu I can open Steam with shift+tab and set my friends to online to talk to my friend. If I goto the "Party Options" and change to Online the second I set it to Online the game crashes.

Is there any way to play multiplayer online in Local mode? Like using Tunngle or Hamachi or something, I had a quick look and people said they haven't got it to work in Tunngle or Hamachi but that was back in 2011 when the game was new - has anyone got a method to do it?

Hey - I am on a mission to determine whether it's possible.. what with Gamespy closing down.. (Dont kno if you play Borderlands.... Anyway I have read soemwher that it is not possible due to that and bad development.. I will keep you updated and if you dont mind(look a bit more and add to this thread (dont expect it to happen over night :P)) , I will prob link this to a series of other threads that are either old or downright confusing...

use a VPN, in my case i used Radmin VPN and you can play with your friend.
