VIP is indeed monthly service.. But farming is literally just an alternative for making money. There are other ways to make money and farming takes a lot of time. Farming in your homestead is free. You use farming in your homestead to level it up and increase the size of your homestead.
1 hob goblin = 1 star, but I sometimes get more than that when soloing and killing groups with a single spell or skill.
There are more than 80 or so hobgoblins during rafting, and it takes 10-20 minutes to go down the raft once.
So a potential 88 stars or 8 x 4000 gold earning per 10-20 minute run. 32,000 gold within less than half an hour. 11 star shoe when bought and sold back to npc will net 4000 gold each.
Potions that comes in stacks of 10 and sold for 3 stars or so, I don't know how much gold they make if you buy and sell but some math would come in handy.
Hmm I guess the best way to measure is gold earned per star value.
Value / Stars = Value per star
4000 / 11 = 363 gold per star
After researching I found a interesting strategy.
With specific skill sets you can buy cheap items from rafting and turn them into higher value items from crafting and sell them to npc for a higher value.
Mandrake x 5 for 17 stars, each can be made into a cooking potion that is 1500 gold when sold to the npc.
1500 x 5 = 7500 gold per 17 stars.
7500 / 17 = 441 gold.
This is if you don't mind preparing a lot of brown pine mushrooms and water and have rank D potion making to make them.

The Free Pets that were mentioned earlier are a Horse and Eagle meant purely for faster travel over some of the game's larger areas, they lack the biggest draw to pets, which is extra inventory space for all of the stuff you'll find/collect.
The Rebirth System:
There are 2 ways to go about rebirth...
Method One: Free Rebirth
Regardless of what age you make your character, every week, your character will grow one year older. Once you reach the age of 20, you can rebirth to Level 1 and whatever age you want. This method does not allow for changes to appearances. Minimum time between each rebirth is 3 weeks.
Method Two: Card Rebirth
Card Rebirths are a much faster and more expensive way to use the rebirth system. Every so often, Nexon will post in the cash shop, Themed Character Cards, for sale with the purpose of rebirthing or creating a new character with a special outfit. These cards can be used on a character once a week, allowing for very fast Level/Ability Point(AP) gain if done correctly. Most players you find on any server who has been around since Generation 9 and is over Total Level 3500 has more than likely used this method to get there. This method is the closest you will ever get in Mabinogi to Pay to Win at $10 a week for a basic character card
Combat:
As mentioned, the combat in the game is Sandbox at best. An example if there ever was one...
Say you make your first character and pick the Knight Talent. This grants you increased skill gain with lance skills and basic combat skills. You enter the world, ready to poke things to death with a 12' stick, and you see someone own you with a bow. Normally, you'd be sad and either learn to combat archers or delete your character and start over as one. In Mabinogi, if this happens, you can simply go buy a bow and some arrows and Presto, you're now training as an archer.
The current Talent System which is a vast improvement over the Destiny System we had before, is not an end all, be all class system. Every skill short of Stomp (Giant), Throw Attack(Giant), Windguard(Giant), Mirage Shot(Elf), Final Shot(Elf), Final Hit (Human), and Arrow Revolver(Human), can be learned by all three races with the only restrictions being minor tweaking to what is required to train. An example of this is Giants have a little less to do than anyone else in Combat skills, but Elves are a little faster at learning Ranged attacks.
As skills are ranked, regardless of what Talent you are, the respective talents for them will go up in level. There are also hidden talents that can be unlock by leveling certain talents to certain points.
IF combat doesn't intrest you in the slightest, Farming before it went VIP for valid reasons would have been your primary source of money, but as things are now, taking a Life Talent will earn you more rewards from Part Time Jobs you can take from NPCs. There is also becoming a merchant of sorts yourself and taking stuff you find or buy cheaply and selling it at what you feel is a better price.
In the end, the best way to know more about Mabi is to play it for a bit, but you've been warned, Mabinogi is like Hotel California, once you enter and really enjoy yourself, you'll never leave
All awsome points, I would like to add however that FFXIV has the 'weapon defines the class' system, its pretty cool to be a Black Mage one minute and a Dragoon the next
Adding onto what other's already pointed out, you can have a spirit weapon. This weapon levels up when you feed it in game items. Eventually this will be the strongest weapon in the game. Of course only you can wield it and speak to it. As you level it, they will eventually unlock a special attack... Only draw back is how annoying it is to repair it and to feed it.
rebirth lets you keep skill and AP and reset your level. Each level up gains 1 AP. AP is used to level skills. Early ranks might be 1-5 points for a skill, later it might be 30-80 points for a rank in the skill. Total level defines what difficulty missions you can unlock (intermediate for 100+, adv for 300+, and hard for 1000+).
Other Pros.
HUGE amount of cuztimization options.
Rebirthing allows you to level up faster, gaining you more ap to rank skills (dont be scared to RB like most new players are it only resets your current level your skill ranks all stay the same, and the only "level" people rly will ask you and thats important is your total level.
as far as random stuff to do for money exp and loot are: dungeons, can be done reapidly as many times as you want. Shadow missions (SMs) like dungeons except above ground in open areas or citys in the shadow realm, Theator missions (TMs) sort of like SMs but you are fighting on a stage and the setting is desghined to look like a play.
Exploration: world can is large, sandbox can be fun to explore, there is an exploration lvl that, like your char level resets every rebirth andd grants AP at every level.
Fun mini games for exploration xp and other rewards such as rafting and hot air balooning.
Transformations: each race (giant/elf/human) have one type of transformation (humans have 2, they can only have one at a time) that can be used once every in game day that boost stats immensely. Humans have paladin/dark knight elves have falcon, and giants have savage beast. All races can also get demi god. which can be activated with or without race trans activated, it grants very quick health and mana recharge, and gives u acees to 2 ( eventauly 3) extremely powerful and useful abilities.
Biggest con about this game to me is the money you put into it if you want go far. I am just starting to play again after a few months break so i no longer am paying for Premium service, but if you want pets in this game you have to buy them from the cash shop. each horse is around $10 a piece and life without at least one hround mount and one flying mount is a pain.
Other cons:
Nexon, by far the worst custermer service you will ever deal with in an MMO.
Players willing to spend more on cash shop will always have advantages over you and more in game cash.
Lag, game can tends to suffer lag spikes.
Glitches: nexon will wait months to fix some glitches. the house board (a way for players to buy and sell items to eachother) has not worked properly for almost a year.
That's one of my favorite parts, there's a TON of different bosses whether they be dungeon or field. The major difference is field bosses spawn with a timer and dungeon bosses are self explanitory. There's a wiki page with all the field bosses on it and they range from hourly to weekly. The absolute strongest field boss is the Red Dragon and along with the other two dragons spawns once a week. There are also giant sand worms, Liches and Devcat's take on the Loch Ness Monster
