Magic/Fighter/Production (Ranking as I see fit?)
If I want to be good at all three of these...is it fine to just rank things however I feel like? I'm thinking of starting off with magic as I want that to be what I'm best at, with fighter skills as a back up.

With this game I'm always worried I'll do the wrong thing and wreck my character, but I'd prefer to just rank things as I feel like. Is it okay to do that or will I find myself getting screwed over somewhere down the road? Any recommended ranks in skills? Any general recommendations? Also, do fighters use regular combat skills as well? Is there a need to rank Windmill early on because everyone always says to, but I never actually feel like doing it. lol

Also, do I need to get refining done before raising production mastery? Any other life skills that should be done before ranking production mastery?
Not quite after the necessary evil of refining, which isn't as bad now adays. I would suggest getting rank 1 WM as soon as possible. Even if you are a fighter. Sometimes you need that Extra defensive /offensive aoe capabilities which fighter skill tree lacks in a more ready position. ~Woops~ And yes Fighters can still use Close Combat skills~

((Keep your Combat Mastery low until its done or you will have one helluv a time ranking it))

You can still do what you wan't you really can. Hellt hats what I did. ((And suffered ranking WM far too alte and was harder than it needed to be)) Hell I don't even have rank 1 refining and I've played for abit.

However my Holy Trinity is Fighter/Combat/ Mage and fist weaposn don't really need a high dex unless you finagle with certain Enchants.

Keep Combat Mastery low until what's done? I always feel like ranking the masteries along side the skills they're associated with >_>. But I guess that's not a good idea? So...once I get Refine done, I can rank Production Mastery however I want? If I rank it a bit, will it effect refine since I heard that the skill was fixed so that it requires less fails. More input welcome! :D Thanks.
Actually, with the Shamala update, you no longer need to worry so much about Refining. Yes, it's still a pain, but if you have extremely high dexterity, you can still get to Rank 1 without the need to fail once now.
Well that's helpful information. Does ranking masteries and such matter? I think the thing is that people say ranking the masteries makes it harder to rank the skills due to CP? I'm not quite sure.
Exactly And Combat Mastery adds up alot. CP (if you don't have mods ) Is the numerical value of how Experienced your character is. It is raised by raising skills. Depending on which skill you raise, some greatly ; some none at all. Thats putting it simply. With your invisible number it matches it to the mobs own CP. You will see requirements of Kill a Boss/Very powerful enemy etc. So if your cp is way over said mob's cp. Leveling WM that requires you to get "Boss" kills will be a PAIN in the ass. There are - cp gear but they are on the exspensive end of the spectrum. But training rank 2 wm on rats VS Multi aggroing badass Laghodessa's with wm, will give you alot less grief. (This is an example) If yous tart of a new character and focus on WM You can get it to rank 1 Easily while doing Generation 1 as well as if you get an average of 50 levels per rebirth. After that do what you want to do with out worrying about something that would take longer to level when you farther up the tiers.

Hope this helps!
1. You can never RUIN your character, you can ALWAYS train things up.
2. Some things are better to train earlier because they can be difficult to train up once your CP gets higher (see above) windmill is by far the main one of these skills.
3. Crafting itself doesn't have CP worries (I don't remember whether or not crafting skill add CP, but I assume if they add stats then probably do) So ranking up the masteries at the same time DOES help but remember to keep enough AP for the actual skills.

This link takes you to a good wiki (skills section to be specific) You can find all the details you could possibly want to know there! (and probably even more)

Also, any type of fighting style can use any type of skills (Ranged fighters usually use windmill a lot too, to help keep people back) however on the actualy Fighter type windmill has a much shorter range, it is however the best area attack you can get for close range fighting, and the sooner it gets to rank one the better. (I have rank 4 because I waited to long, if I go with the intent of training it now it would take me weeks to get to 1, or years if I don't aim to train it)
