Woes of a mage
So I started up the game after a while today. I started the Gen 19 quest line just because it was new on my list. Start getting to the parts where I have to fight the crystal boars. Turns on they all have mana deflector or whatever it's called and can three shot me. Well I can two shot them, so not a huge deal. Thats when I get to this Pennar fellow. Pennar has Level 3 Natural Shield, Mana Deflector, Advanced Heavy Stander and can Teleport and use Final Hit. So all my spells only do 1 damage, and even when I have mana shield on he still tears through me. This is basically a wall I have no idea how to get through. Most of the higher end mobs have super high resistance to magic, and there's nothing I can think of that would get around that. This just helps me remember why I always stop playing the game. I know it's kind of my fault for going pure mage, but to have the end game be like that is bs. Oh well, just wanted to vent.

First of all, Yes, you majorly ♥♥♥♥♥♥ yourself by ignoring close combat. Without close combat, you can't damage some enemies, not to mention it's WHERE YOU GET YOUR HEALTH AND DEFENSE. Lemme guess, you have 600mp, but less than 200 hp and some random stamina, huh? Yeah. Close combat would even your stats, and it's the default fallback combat style for ANY situation. I do not think there has ever been a situation where close combat did not have at least half effect. Now, while I'm not saying magic is bad (Infact, it's insanely powerful when you max it all out) Close combat is currently also buffed out the ass.

I was in your position once too- A powerful gunner who pushed out 100k in 30 seconds, yet I could be one-shot by bears and golems. An extreme glass cannon.

Here's my advice: Get a royal knight armor chestpiece, and a decent melee weapon. Go two handed if you're a human, or dual wield. Then level Heavy armor, Close combat, Defense, Counter, smash, windmill, Bash if you can get your hands on it, and the mastery for your weapon. It should put you at 500 hp minimum, and boost your defence to well over one hundred. You should instantly become a HELL of a lot less fragile.

I used to think close combat was useless myself. Then I took a Statcheck to the characterwindow.

You know you just might be on to something. I do have 200+ AP I've got nothing to do with right now, might as well burn it.

Only method I did to get passed that with a mage was using Meteor Strike which deals some physical damage instead of pure magic damage. Other methods would be use Demigod abilities, Hydra Transmutation or Life Drain if you have them. Having a mage character I can understand your frustration. If you do not have Demigod then I suggest you get it seeing as how G9-G12 was made significantly easier than what it used to be and will be super helpful in some fights like this where magic isn't a real viable option.

Melee is so overpowered now, especially with the damage increase to Final Hit. Also for G19 its also recommended to have several Nao Soul Stones or Balloons that can revive you to be on the safe side and help make sure all your work was not wasted.

Yeah I don't have demigod or the rest of those, just chaos knight or whatever it's called. So apparently I'm way behind the story content haha. But ok, I'll try going through those.

hmm, I'm kind of torn over what melee weapon to focus on. There's a lot of weapon swapping involved just to use my spells, If I want to add a melee weapon, I'd have to lose a wand or a staff. I was thinking the mage gauntlets, but you can't use the 3 combos with heavy armor apparently, and I don't want to lose that.

I'd just stick with a max roll 4CC Savage Fire Wand + Guard Cylinder combo for the melee stuff. And it lets you combine 4CC firebolt with full strength Blaze to add into your melee combos and a shield, and if your weapon had a close to max damage/wound/dura/MA roll, it'll do decent damage once you get some melee skills ranked up (though it sucks wands don't count as blunt weapons since that'd add a little more damage and the ability to use Bash). But more importantly, the wands have a wound rate similar to bows, so even though the max damage is lower then what a more specialized melee weapon can do, it will cause a lot of wound damage.

And even at rF sand-blast is beyond useful for getting some distance between you and the enemy. Between that and Crisis escape there shouldn't be much that can threaten you 1 v 1 or 2 v 1 (the cooldown before an enemy can be blinded again is about 20 seconds or so).

Oh, I wasn't aware you could have a wand and a guard cylinder equipped at the same time. That would be pretty useful. I'll look into that. Not sure about the armor though. I'm kind of digging all the extra def, but I dunno. I'll have to think on it.

The guard cylinder is a miracle worker.
