At hight levels spirit weapons are the most powerful in the game. Without god weapons being close because of speical abilities.
Skill xp is capped to keep you from building them up too quickly, so it's best to focus on the smallest gems, 3-4 stat gems you can get in order to raise the spirit efficiently. (with exception to diamonds, the more stats a gem gives xp to the lower the individual xp is per stat, but also makes it easier to control how much xp the weapon is getting).
Though most people agree that aside from a Spirit Fire Wand, Spirit weapons just aren't worth it anymore. they need to be around 50+ level just to compete with other much easier to acquire weapons.
they're fun to use though (especially popping their Awakening skill), don't get me wrong on that, but they're far from the be all end all they used to be.
