Certain general stores sell bait tins. Buy a pole and some bait, go to a fishing spot like the bridges next to the windmill in Tir. Then you'll be fishing. When you get a nibble, a box will tell you you can try to catch it in a basic minigame fashion. If you don't want to do the minigame, it will auto complete and you'll either get a fish/item or fall on your butt.

the actual manual fishing is super easy, but it happens so fast it can take a few attempts before you get the hang of what you're supposed to be doing, but once you do, barring a lag spike, you should never miss a fishing.

Also...don't auto-fish until like 7+ cause the auto-fish success rate is terrible (even at r1 it's only 70%). Though if you're leaving it on over night, that's fine.

just simply start fishing and walk away from the computer.

Whenever you get a bite, a little box will pop-up to manual fish or if you don't click yes, it'll auto fish after a few seconds.

But early on the auto-fish success rate is abyssmal and successes raise your skill much faster. And once you get to.....I think E or D, you no longer get any skill progress at all for failures.

Also the time to get a bite is based on your fishing skill, so at novice/F it takes forever between bites and slowly gets better.
