Aside from acquiring pets (which you can get additional free pets by completing Generation 18 for the Pegasus (you can get one per character) and, of course, from most of the events. Even the AH sells pet whistles.
Another trick that I do to squeeze in some extra inventory space is to buy a Kiosk. You can get one from Walter in Dunbarton for 50k. What's nice about it is that you can store it in a bag and not in your main inventory! Make sure you're on a channel that has no sellers and go to the other side of the wall in the area where the trading imps are located (go to Ch1 if you don't know where they are and you can find a few there), install it, put stuff in the kiosk that you want to store. You will have to set a price, however. Since you can use it to sell things, I suggest pricing items you're only storing at 1 million... the kiosk's max amount you can set for each item. A piece of advice: try not to put expensive items in there because someone is liable to rip you off, even at 1 mil.
If you haven't already, be sure to acquire doll bags that can pick up gold and other mats so you can focus on the fight. Some are fairly cheap on the AH. Also, depending on where you are in the Generations storyline, you can eventually craft Far Darrig Doll Bags.
And lastly, here is a list of storage bags: https://wiki.mabinogiworld.com/view/Storage_Items_List
Just to put something right: They've shot themselves in the foot, when they've decided to design a billion of new items, without those improving the game experience or the rate of sustainable satsifaction a player may draw from using them. The inventory system itself, is absolutely fine, However, pets have always been essential. (Nothing exceptional in MMOs)
