is this game worth it ?
i am sure there have been so many similar threads to this , but as someone who have played so many MMOs and now taking a break from ffxiv , i am very familiar with how they work so i am not looking for an easy game like aura kingdom , i want an mmo that has some challenging content , or at least some stuff to do and not just boring endless mindless grinding .
in terms of content and gameplay is this game worth playing these days ? does it get expansions , updates , events very often ? is the community still alive ? is it p2w ?

Theres lots of grind in mabinogi, but theres also lots of skills, lots of content, lots of places to visit, lots of dungeons, lots of things to do. Constant updates/expansions, lots of events, community is still here, we still have more players than stuff like rift or wildstar. This game is p2w, as is pretty much any mmo these days.

Although Mabinogi can be seen as P2W, you can get around that and enjoy the game for yrs without dishing out of your own pocket.

In recent years, a lot of cash shop items have become tradable, so they can be purchased from other players with in game gold if you don't want to spend any irl money on the game. I know quite a few players who have played Mabi for yrs who have not spent a single dime on this game thanks to being able to purchase cash shop items from other players with in game gold.

Also, a lot of events can offer free pets w/inventory space and offer inventory bags to help expand your characters personal inventory. Pets that normally could only be purchased from the cash shop in the past can also be purchsed with in game gold from fellow players. Events also offer cash shop items as free rewards, although they might not be tradable or they expire after a certain amount a time.

Even P2W items from the cash shop to help you train skills faster, give extra stats to equips, etc, can be purchased from other players in game so you aren't "locked out" of content due to P2W.

So I just wanted to let you know OP that there are available options to get around the P2W aspect. Hopefully you will decide to give this unique game a try. :)

I've never shelled out a single cent in the past several years, and I'm doing alright at the moment (I'd guess I'm in the early end of mid-game, power-wise? Took a big hiatus from the game a while back, and returned a few months ago).

There are some aspects that are grindy - certain skills, in particular, are sort of ridiculous to train (glaring at you, Windmill!), but most are either straight forward (or incidental, with the passives) - you are going to be doing the things that level the skill up so often that you can ignore the skill exp entirely, and just do a happy dance when it randomly gets to the point where it can be leveled (the Combat Mastery passive skill, for example, any time you kill something [at high Ranks, it requires killing high powered enemies, but, still, it's pretty easy]. If you go into combat even occassionally, you note this one rising pretty steadily, no extra work on your part needed).

In fact, most of your bread and butter combat moves, for whatever combat style you prefer, will level up without too much extra work, since most of them level by being used, and you will be using them a lot as a matter of course. (no duh, but it does need to be said. This isn't some masochism tango where you are going to need 10,000 uses of a skill to level it just once. Most active skills are upgradable in 30 or 40 uses up until Class 2 or 3 [starts as class E, tops out at 1*], if you've used them the right way.

Life skills (crafting) require more intention, but generally aren't hard - though they do often involve mini-games, and you will need to be at least vaguely competent to do well - though acquiring the resources can be a headache.

As to events, some are lame, some are interesting - the Anniversary event was a lot of fun, as is the Orphan event running right now (it's a mini Princess Maker deal), but the attendance check event is literally what it says on the tin, sooo XD milage can vary - but the devs are clearly trying to keep it interesting with new content and stuff. They recently released a new combat style, with a brand new mechanic, for example.

*some skills have "Dan"s - extra ranks above 1, that take certain extra procedures to reach, once you are at 1, but they are not norm.

Might want to pass on this one then. Game is hard in some areas but for all the wrong reasons. Game is heavily reliant on good ping in combat as well. Sometimes it feels archaic and old in game design. Grind is mabinogi's main thing. I mean you could just never level up life skills, but they give stats and you'll be overall weaker than the average player if you don't.

Even though no one outright says it, the game is p2w. Not horribly bad like Aeria games for sure. But there's a huge difference between someone who throws money at the game and one who doesn't. I've put maybe 8000 hours of grind into the game probably much more than that, and I have a tenth of the DPS of people who reforged and upgraded their equipment to the max with upgrade stones/enchants who play the game a fraction of the time that I do. This is excluding pets who often have op or very useful effects that you as a free player will only occasionally get from events.

But that said the game is almost entirely co-op oriented(excluding the pvp that no one does anymore/guild wars) so even tho there's elements of p2w, it doesn't really matter tbh. And one can argue that yeah anyone can buy casher items to boost their gear, but you have to spend 12 hours a day to grind out the gold to eventually buy reforges/upgrade protection stones/enchant protection pots/enchants/good weapons while ignoring spending any money into fashion or skills, which I do regularily.

The game always events going on tho. Ranging from crossovers with cosmetics from other games/anime to generic copy and paste ones that return every year. There's usually 2-3 going on at any given time but most feel soulless if I'm being honest.

Lastly on the community part I can't speak for Alexina players, I hear it's active there, but I'm in Mari and the place is a ghost town filled with a couple afks sometimes. In Dunby(the main town everyone hangs out in) I once seen only 5 player ran shops during peak hours for the game. It's not always this low, but it does say something about the game. Don't choose any server that isn't Alexina if you want players to play with. That's if you end up playing.

I have spent more time on this game then I should do in one sitting but it's a grate game for you and your friends to play in it has died down some but over all to me it's a awesome game

:nao:Game is very enjoyable and relaxing depending on what ya do but it has fallen downhill with quite a bit of noteable features removed. Also the lack of players is a huge issue as of right now due to most of them either spammers or indefinitely afk. However, those who are not afk most are more than willing to help out if ya ask or even take the time to answer any questions you may have.
The community is by far the most friendliest an helpful I've ever experienced out of the countless games I've played online so its relatively easy to find someone whos active to help out in getting your grounds figured out. Things have been too simplified removing alot of the good feel it used to have so expect a little less than what it had to offer when it was just released as I've played it since that time to now (not counting steam hours but over 2000+ on xfire). Its more than worthy to pick up and enjoy if ya not picky about graphics being a huge issue and not entirely pay2win like most say.
You can get pretty much any weapon, armor, etc in the game with gold ya earn in the game and if ya grind some to get your skills up there you can craft the more powerful ones yourself and some players have these at times out to sell for ingame gold so if your dedicated you can aquire them. Overall its allmost a near perfect game experience for that fantasy slice of real life feel with a great community!:nao:

Unavoidable when the game is centered around It.

Want the best gear? Grind for hundreds of hours for dailies, get lucky with a drop- If it's actually half worth It, have rich friends who spoil you, have rich guildmates who spoil you, gachapon 'all time low' prices, or Nexon's favorite, shell out your credit card.
Chouno Jun 4, 2018 @ 7:12pm
oh please, good events tossed out beam swords and reforges like candy. If you wanted to buy good ones just look for them, they are not expensive.

Only game breaking reforges cost anything to acquire. you're going to have to wait for tresure chest events for those free reforges, cause they aren't worth buying at that price!

Nexon cash shop is almost entirely centered around FASHIONOGI, gachapon are just filled with random crap to make your character look good.

Despite this you have to really, and I mean really milk these reforge events to possibly get a single item to rank 1 reforge status and still get a good reforge. And still there's a huge luck factor

Last Caravan Joe I milked 10 characters every single day, used every single reforge and finally got my item to rank 1. While I've done the event maybe 5 times in my life before that and only got an item up to r2.

Rainbow beam sword don't seem to compete on the highest levels of play. If you're going for a medium level of play, an average person in the game, sure. You'll still be crying yourself to sleep when you look at the leaderboards in festia for how much dps everyone else got though. Even if you get enchanted versions of those Rainbow Beam swords, which bypass the expensive argument.

Enchants and upgrades are where it's at. With good rolls on exceptionally hard to craft weapons. And there's a myriad of gacha/cash shop items that matter in this department. Amazing enchants, enchantment protection potions, special upgrade stones, upgrade protection stones. This is excluding stuff like Titles coupons or glimmering supplements which are another huge advantage for characters that you need to shell out millions to not be behind on.

It would be worth playing most likely if it was run by a non cancer gaming company,so I won't touch it.

Thats disceptive garbage. The only way your going to see huge damage calculations for dps for comparable weapons with with exclusive event only enchants like 56th floor, and 6 rank red upgrade. And R1 20 reforges. Enchants will help adding max damage, but most come staple of gacha versions of the gear.

normal upgrade with no enchants.
Celtic royal knight sword
Highest Max Damage
Artisan Upgrade
(Max Roll)Attack 40-107

Focused Rainbow Beam Sword
90~180

Strongest 1h sword enchants

56th Floor's enchant
+50~60 Str if Defense Rank 1+
+20~35 Max Damage if Evasion Rank 6+
+10% Critical

48th Floor's
+28~35 Max Damage if Windmill Rank 1+
+25~30 Min Damage if Critical Hit Rank 1+
+7% Critical

as a quick heads up, you cannot acquire those enchants anymore. Meaning that technically if you spend, 9.8k nx to enchant protect, didnt lose any dura, got a max roll celtic sword, and spent the millions of gold or tons of nx during the SAO even, you could have a weapon that looks like.

Enchanted 7 red upgrade variant
Celtic royal knight sword
Highest Max Damage
Artisan Upgrade
(Max Roll)Attack 90-201
with 63% additional crit damage <---- thats what matters the most

So yeah, the Focused rainbow is pretty much the best you can get without somehow going back in time and buying limited time overpowered enchants, and spending tons of nx and gold on the process not to royally screw them up.

The only thing deceptive is your post. 63% crit damage is of course one hell of a difference in pure dps. So you either go an affordable rainbowbeam sword and have 0% crit damage bonus or go a vastly inferior CRK sword that still will run you into the ground with costs and get it up to a step 5 special upgrade. You rarely get artisan removal kits free in the game either, so good luck relying on getting a high roll for that, thus further seperating the difference. Although you can enchant it with something mildly okay that's less risky and more affordable, it's still a long road to do even that.

If it were just a CRK swords and their difference in dps of what's possible on just the basics of enchants/max artisan rolls, crafted stats, well it'd still be huge, 100max atk difference per each attack isn't anything to scoff at, but it's just the tip of the iceberg as my post points out.

But you simply compare one thing, one weapon, one difference. You fail to factor anything else, reforges, reforge plus, all capable of being on different pieces of eqiupment. All infinitely useful effects that can add more than just simple damage. Sword mastery or combat mastery damage is a flat out 20+ max atk, final hit cooldown/duration/max damage, Smash damage of 200% increase ffs, attack speed, max atk(38+), stat increase such as strength, etc etc.

And the idea that things can only come down to just weapons is just silly as well. Accessories, gloves, hats, armour/clothing, shoes. 6 other items you can have eqiupped, all that can be reforged and enchanted, which you'd need enchantment protection potions and reforges for if you want godly ones. And here's where the differences start piling up in power. Titles, totems, homestead figures. All can make a difference in stats that just add up. With unlimited money you can buy progress easier too, essentially buying rebirth/forgetful pots off people, training seals. Divine linking with a level 200 pet that was immediately aged up with cash shop item can give you a nasty 80+ max atk increase alone just because of the strength it gives.

Like I said earlier in another post, factor in everything, there's a disgusting difference between the free player and one the cash shop is capable of providing. I get a respectable 300k damage per singleplayer clobbermeister with those rainbow beam swords and my best enchants/equipment/buffs. While cash shop players get 2,000k damage runs. I have more combat power than everyone I meet, my skills are all nearly as rank 1/dan3 where possible. I've got 12 talents that are master/grandmaster, with the rest being close behind, very good totems/figures. And I still do a fraction of the damage they're capable of outputting.

Although you may need to give Nexon a small fortune, and some of these extremely op cash shop items/enchants may have been limited time, it doesn't dismiss that the game is pay to win and that spending money in the game will ultimately lead to you doing better damage/having an easier time.

I'm just going to make this simple, since you still don't get it.

1.)Nexon cash shop is almost entirely centered around FASHIONOGI, gachapon are just filled with random crap to make your character look good. if you doubt me, go on the auctionhouse right now, (doesn't matter the server) The most expensive items are not dps gear! Just bought ice spear explosion radius 19 level; and an outfit that makes you turn into a cat was 3 times more expensive!

2.)Trying to say "well items xyz exist so its p2w" is a dumb statement. When those items are not acquireable to over 99% of the community and only a handful of min-maxing whales have them. (Those items were also up for gold, even though it was an absurd amount.)

3.) Nexon does not measure their pen and paper min-maxers as their end game. The game's difficulty would be radically different if that was the case. Spoilers! You dont need +15-35 damage enchants on every slot, red upgraded weapons, and 20 level 3 bar reforges to beat G21 finale, or the rundal nightmare dungeon.

4.)F2P has alternatives to Pay items. Min max some battle swords (if you're poor) or celtic swords (if you're less poor), they'll be fine.

5.)There is no need to break you bank account to get BIS items, thats a huge waste of money, get something on the market thats similar, it'll be fine.

6.) min maxing does not have much of a point, average mobs against any difficulty are just destroyed by a high total with garbage gear. The only thing that would warrent it at all are the raids, but their rewards suck anyway. Go ahead and spend thousands so you can have gloating rights that you solo'd a sandwurm, who cares?

Also most damage reforges suck compared to range or cooldown ones. Adding 30 damage is not comparable to final hit distance, cooldown, or duration increase. Just like increasing the radius of Rain Casting, Shock, and Ice spear is great. Reforged R1 3 bars with great effects are pretty much the best thing you can look for at higher levels. Also you can do that FOR FREE.

Trying to tell players "Rainbow beam sword don't seem to compete on the highest levels of play. If you're going for a medium level of play, an average person in the game, sure"

is disingenious. If your yard stick ends in pen and paper nx whales you need to switch to metric.

What makes you stronger in mabinogi is an absurd amount of time. The more talents to master/grandmaster the more stats, which exponetially increase your damage. All the reforges and gear in the world wouldn't make the difference between ttl 1 and ttl 10k. a 10k ttl could literally bare handed punch that player a single time and drop them.
Can't Buy The time it takes to grind out all those levels.

I'm just going to make this simple, since you still don't get it. There is so many boosters in that item shop its ridiculous.

http://mabinogi.nexon.net/Shop/WebShop/ItemShop

Not to mention they got these subs:

http://mabinogi.nexon.net/Shop/WebShop/Services

So if thats not pay 2 win or pay to advance faster, either way your progressing though game faster which means winning, pay2win.

There is so many better ways to do f2p model.

I would rather pay for DLC's then go to an item shop and buy boosters and whatever.
