VIP and premium services are not free, but they often give away premium features such as style tabs and extra equipment setups in events. The current master plan gives 30 days of them.
The game also gives you premium pets with LOTS of inventory space. Some are super easy to get (cloud pet with large inventory and can fly and heal, get it from first dungeon run in 5 mins). Other pets takes longer (2 - 3 hours) but are also awesome. You can get a lot of premium pets for free from doing main quests (again, 2-3 hours each character). Events also give out very good pets, but those ones require quite a bit of work to get.
but if your a completely free player you will get all sorts of cool stuff for free even some cash shop items or premium features as long as you are a active player. they have even given free players up to two weeks of VIP for free at least 3 times in the past couple of years.
But otherwise you don't need it if you play this game like a generic MMORPG for leveling and stuff.
The #1 issue many players run into is always 'inventory space' which is what Nexon's MTX works off of if you do not use pets for storage, or do not use special big 'bags' to store things.
That's why I suggest newbies to not get attached to items, period, because you end up hoarding and spending much money on pets and stuff, only to keep hoarding.
