P.S: People who give you advice here are usually biased based on characters that they currently play alot and main. I gotta say that at some point you should play everyone and then decide on which character you like the most. Kind of like in Streetfighters, you gotta play every character first before deciding who you're best with. (I main hurk/silas, but I've played every class in the game (with the help of going on my rl friend's account).)
Hurk is quite defensive, provided you know how to properly time things. For instance, pushing space and then attacking will intiate a dodge forward into a parry strike back. This does two things. One, a lot of damage and two it stuns the boss and cancels their attack. You can even do it to certain range attacks and he is also durable in the sense of invuln frames.
Also, to the guy saying "God of Vindi for Vella" I do hope you're joking. Less you not talking about chain blade vella, cause that is simple, blade however requires very good timing.
It is, but it can also be kinda iffy to use (at least in my experience).
as for your 6 slots, i REALLY recommend you give Karok a look, especially since you stated that you like melee but made an exception for evie because explosions. Caestus Karok is literally punch things and explode them.
EDIT: Here's some gameplay (not by me, obv) showing essentially how caestus karok works:

of course, if you are into slow but extremely heavy hitting attacks, hurk is definitely your guy.
As for most difficult to solo, i'd probably say Lan, but I probably just suck with him (he was also my first character back when the game only had 2). And I recommend finding some friends to play with as the game is a LOT more fun that way. plus, you get an exp bonus when you're in a party.
Better learn. You only get to do solo things for the first 30ish levels or so. You will likely be strong for now though because of the game's leniancy in leveling, but the first time you go up against kheagan when you unlock him, you will be begging for mates to play with. Granted, he is easier, as he should be with higher gear and knowledge of his attacks. He is as we like to call "The newbie Wrecker" He still woops lvl 80+ people which is hilarious to me xD.
ugh, kheagan.....why'd ya have to mention kheagan........there goes any dps i have with my longbow....
No you won't.
