The gear you need throughout the story is relatively easy to get as it drops from missions, you can craft it earlier and use it ahead of time, or buy it from the market if it's available. Case in point, armageddon armor; it drops from S2 missions, but chances are you'll already been above level 80 by the time you get there, so you can build up your armorsmithing and craft it beforehand to wear, or use the lower level gear and wait for the mission drops, up to you.
The point where gear starts to really matter is actually end game, level 100+, when you start building counterforce and concerning yourself more with the little stats like attack speed and crit rate.
I play the same way you do, although I skip story now because I've seen it about a dozen times already. If you're looking for a solo type RPG experience, you can still get that, just take the game slow, play at your own pace, the option to skip and get xp boosters, craft, etc, is still there, it's just that most people have built up their characters over the years to where they want a rush to end game, and the developers have made that available to us, a lot of newer players don't realize this and quit prematurely because it's too easy to do x and y.
Btw what's your profile background? The moving city scape, I love it
