noob question inbound
do essences only drop in s3 ex raids on hero mode?

They drop from both versions. Hero mode gives you +1 core and a "hero mode box" that has a small chance for primal flame weapons, but often give decent stuff too.

Like others have said, use Seals of Bravery instead. You can get multiple from a single run of Royal Army Raid or Abyssal Arena.

Specifically what kind of essence? [Boss Name] Essence? Astera Essence?

all the first few raid bosses that were very recently nerfed into not being raid bosses anymore. like regina lugh glas etc. specifically the one i'm focused on is eochaid.

Yes, they do still drop. Eochaid and Abomination essences I would generally recommend to just get through seals of bravery unless you want to drop like 5-9mil on the marketplace. Farming for it to sell makes sense. You aren't likely to get it in a timely manner if you farm for it.
