2. The game is very much alive. Players are really loyal to the game. Two main servers, NA/EU & whatever the other one was again... The community is nowhere near the toxicity of league of legends. Honestly, its hard to actually feel any toxicity from the game unless you seek it out.
I used to play DN a long time ago. There's some similarities in the game but a vast amount of differences.
3. P2W. It's there but it isn't a hindrance. There's no paywalls or anything, just nothing but cosmetics items and RNG chance decreasers. People pay a lot for cosmetic items which can be sold in game too. Time is tthe strongest adversary in this game, if you want to be strong fast then you can say this game is P2W. If you're fine gradually growing then this game is fine.
On the other hand, if you want the best cosmetics, highest level weaponry, to compete in "Raids" (team orientated boss fights), enjoy end-game in general, and to avail the full extent of the crafting system (*a high level of crafting skill is required for the best gear -- a catch-22 tied to some high level 'plateau' boss fights... indeed, each, separate skill of which {weaponsmithing, armorsmithing etc.} only one char. profile can possess at any one time), you will pay through the teeth for it.
This game incorporates an upgrade system ("enhancements") that has a hyperbolic decrease in success probability, inversely proportionally to the upgrade level being attempted (*albeit, a guaranteed success mechanics does seem to have been implemented recently... but, which still take many failures for it to grant a 100% successful upgrade or buff / "enchantment") -- effectively forcing the use of "Protection Runes" (items that stop equipment degradation / destruction upon inevitable upgrade attempt failures), which are not easy to come by (without paying for them), and which also usually get consumed--successful upgrade or otherwise.
In other words, the game is now easy enough to play solo or co-operatively until Lv100 (*possible to power level to ~10 days); after which point, copious real-world money or an unwieldy amount of in-game zenny ("gold") is needed to acquire the gear for chars. to continue to compete. In this sense, you could get a lot of free-play time from levelling the dozen or whatever characters that are in the game (if that's your thing)... It's just that not everything will be accessible to non-$u¢ker$.
The most pay to win aspect of the game is outfitters but you can actually buy them in the market for relativly cheap
