What's in the gog version?
Hi
So I’ve previously owned thief 2 on steam, however I was getting stuttering every few seconds. On the steam version I had the

-Tafferpatcher http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=131106.
-Open AL 2.1.0.0. http://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/10-openal/ .
-Thief 2 sound enhancement http://www.ttlg.com/forums/showthread.php?t=119405 .

I just bought the thief 2 the metal age on gog, and tried out the first mission without any mods and didn’t get any stuttering! So I was just wondering which of these mods I should download than? I think Thief 2 on gog has something similar to tafferpatcher, but honestly I don't care about graphics that much. Much rather have a locked 60fps. Actually don’t know what open al does to be honest. But in audio I have Hardware Acceleration open Al as my choice. It sounds good only thing is certain times things that I feel like should be louder are actually a lot quieter. Like picking up something and throwing it down. So should I install the sound enhancement and open al? And if so should I start a new game? Only beaten the first mission so I won’t have to redo much.

At this point, I want to keep the framerate locked at 60 fps no matter what. So graphics can stay the same, but I would like the sound to be better!

You could have replicated the GOG version by disabling all the graphics mods on your old version.
Anyway, Hardware acceleration isn't really necessary if you ask me, but the sound enhancement should be fine.

GOG one is already patched with NewDark, that is the one and only difference as far as I know. You really shouldn't have differences in performance between Steam version with Tafferpatcher installed and GOG version.

Also, wasn't there a thread where you asked about having a low framerate in T2X? Did you find a solution for that? You shouldn't have deleted your thread if you did, someone else might have encountered same issues and you thread might have helped them.

It sounds like the texture/graphics mods messed things up. Either that or your installation/computer was messed up in some way.

Oh that was simply my laptop acting weird. I actually have to do something about it...

I tried disabling it all, lowered the resolution to the lowest, and the stuttering was still there. Okay so you think downloading open AL is uncessary? So when you play the thief games you have hardware acceleration off? But I should go ahead with the sound enhancement.
Also I've asked around, and people are suggeesting that I download Tafferpatcher anyway? But my game runs fine. Should I do it?

Oh great, I just installed the sound enhancement, and I'm getting stuttering now. Does anyone know how to uninstall it?
The sound pack causes stuttering? what the hell?
To remove it, go into Thief2/RES, delete snd.crf and rename snd.bak to snd.crf

Idk, I just tried using fraps to record the frames. And it was 60 fps in the first mission, except whenever I saved and it dropped to 58 for a half second. In the second mission, in five minutes it stuttered to 42 and 38, but the rest was 60 fps. Is this normal for you?
Nope and I have the sound pack. Might be a problem with your sound device, etc.

Maybe, apparently the sound device I have, Realtek HD, is why I can't play deus ex invisible wars :/ But I'll just deal with it I guess, since two stutters in five minutes is a lot better than before.

Just one last question, when you play thief two, do you have hardware acceleration on,off, or on open al?
I prefer it off, it's a matter of taste. On seems to amplify certain sounds and reduce others. EAX/OpenAL makes it really echo-ey.
Do you use headphones?

Yeah I have the sennheiser hd 600 and an amp/dac for this. First time I beat thief 1 and 2, I had it off. But everyone on ttlg said it was better with it on, but I agree that it seems to make it way too echoy.

I prefer it off, but use what you prefer! The sounds in Thief 1 and 2 already have reverb in them, so personally i don't see the need for more.

Alrighty, thanks a ton for the help! Btw just want your personal opinion, how would you rank thief 2x to the original three thief games?

Thief2x? Better than Deadly Shadows, slightly better than Thief 2, but not quite as good as Thief Gold. Level design is the best in the series, but cutscenes and plot are not quite as good.
