Yeah, the newest game is very mediocre! But I'd say you should start with Thief Gold instead.

Those people I would not entirely agree with. It's a matter of preference. Thief 2 is more conventional (some would say boring, others more focused on thievery), 1 has more weird stuff and variety. The story is good in both games, but the 2nd follows on from the 1st.
