apply T2Fix or T2Fix lite on a windows machine (virtual if you have to), move the now portable install to the linux machine and start from there.

I can confirm the game works flawlessly on Linux (I'm using Debian Sid).
You can execute T2Fix with no issue via wine and also make sure to install OpenAL, either through T2Fix or protontricks.
After that, the game just launches normally with proton.

Use "Protontricks" and open the Thief II Wine prefix. You should have the open to "launch an arbitrary executable" in the prefix. It will then launch T2Fix through Wine and you can follow the installer to install the T2Fix files into the game folder.

This is never necessary with Protontricks or Winetricks.

Sorry I think I misunderstood your post. Try using Proton-GE 7-xx. That's what I had to use to get the videos to play properly.
